Air Bombers Sink Battleships _Sltvl'zTxxg' TJ.ffffVt trg tjrua. , The effertivness of bombing battleships from the air from a high alti tude was shown off the Virginia rapes when Marlin bombing planes of the i I nited States army sunk the obsolete battleships New Jersey and V'irglnia. [ Planes effectively dropped 1,100-pound bombs from a height of 10,000 feet, f Tills excellent photograph shows one of the bombs hitting the Virginia, sending her to the bottom. >' - Secret Service Officers Guard Mrs. Wallace Reid Arriving Here _ _r Comes From Montana Where Little Son Played Snow ball for First Time in Life. Slight, with mournful dark eyes and a small white face framed In an aureole of bobbed Titian locks, Doro thy DavenPort Reid, widow of Wallace Reid, descended from a Union Pacific train at the Union depot at 7:40 Satur day evening between two secret serv 0|t4ce men. The star's widow was wrapped In a magnificent fur coat and wore a fur-trimmed cap pulled down closely over her shining hair, and waved a great sheaf of roses, the gift of Omaha admirers. Friday, she and her little son played snowball In Wyoming in the first snow which the little Cali fornian had ever seen. With Mrs. Reid was her mother, Mrs. A. S. Davenport. ‘‘Everywhere I have gone in pre senting my warning against dope and drugs, hundreds of mothers and sisters and friends of victims have come to me for consolation and sympathy,” said Mrs. Reid. "In several places the drug ring has threatened me with violence, but it has not done any thing. "People don't dte from drugs or the effect of drugs. They die from the Ignorance of the world.” Bo said Mrs. Reid later as she sat in her flower-filled apartment at the Fontenelle hotel and outlined her .crusade against the ignorance which caused the death of her husband, a death all the more tragic because, as she now believes, it w.as unnecessary and avoidable. "That was the whole trouble In ally's case. He stopped short in the use of drugs. I was so happy when he did so. That was right, that was the thin? to do, that was show ing his wilt power and proving him self a man. “And he sufTered the tortures of the damned, and then he died. Cheated by Death. "And it was all quite unnecessary and preventable. I know now that if he had reduced the use of morphine gradually he could have cured him self of the drug sickness and yet lived. "We speak of the drug habit as a vice, a habit, somethin? that can he cured by will power alone It Is not: it cannot bp. It is a d'seased cond. tion, just as much as influenza nnd tuberculosis are diseased conditions. We do not expect a man to cure him self of consumption by the exercise of his will, and morphine addiction Is just as much a physical condition as consumption. "By our Ignorance, our shame, our lack of understanding and sympathy, we are driving these addicts against the wall. We look them up without the drug and think to cure them. They suffer Intolerable tortures. Per Hotel Fraud Case Will Open Monday C, Dorsey of Omalia Will Lead in Court Fight at Lincoln. Special Dispatch to The Omaha Bee. Lincoln, Sept. 30.—Officials of the Nebraska Hotel company and the Ne braska Building and Investment com pany, affiliated organizations, who are under indictment on a charge of using the malls to defraud, will he tried in the federal district court Mon day. The officials are Frank IS. SchnIT, former president of the company; James E. Gore. H. L. Lohmeyer and E. O. Gregg. Tho trial will be tho first on the calendar for the October term of the court. W. C. Dorsey of Omaha, assisted by Don W. Stewart, assistant district attorney, will prosecuto for tho gov ernment. Unless K. C. Hoyt, district clerk situated at Omaha, comes here for the sitting of the court, J. H. McOlay, deputy clerk of the district court, will preside. Tho government claims that Schnff and his associates misrepresented the value of tho stock of the Nebraska Hotel company In literature which Ihey mailed to prospect^ye pur chasers. The company either held title to or tho lease of tho Hotel Fontenelle, Omaha; Lincoln hotel, Lincoln; Lin coln hotel, Scottsbluff; Franklin hotel, Franklin; Evans hotel, Columbus, and the Coates House, Kansas City. Des Moines, Sept. 30.—Tho Des ^,^#lolnoH river has risen seven-tenth of a foot in 4 hours and will be over the four-foot level by tomorrow, weather bureau officials announced. It Is still rising rapidly with the con tmued rains. haps they die. Perhaps they survive and begin to put on weight. We say they are well. Then a year later something goes wrong, and we never think it is because their nervous systems were absolutely shattered Dy our barbarous methods of 'cure.' Opiates Lead to Habit. ^ "There is a very important political work to be done in restraining the drug traffic. With that I am in sym pathy. but it is not tny personal work. There are now between one and two million drug addicts in the United States. My heart goes out to these men and women; my message is to them and to those who love them. "In every case of drug addiction which has come under my personal observation, the ‘habit1 began with ill ness. Usually It began with opiates prescribed by a doctor. People think of opium in connection with the un derworld, tout fu'ly 85 per ent of the addicts arc just decent resoectaole people who have come to depend upon the drug In all Innocence. "If we would think of this thing in terms of sickness and its cure, in stead of vice, w» could help these peo ple so much more." Mrs. Reid moved off quickly through the mist to put Rilly to bed by hiH usual bed time, 8 o’clock. Wal lace Reid's son is a sturdy little fel low with his mother's beautiful ltd curls. "And oh! I'm afraid be has inher ited his mother's practical disposition Instead of his father's wonderful ar tistic powers," mourns Mrs. Reid. "If he could have his heart’s ambition right now he would be a plumber." FUNERAL NOTICES. ELLIOTT—Addle entered Into rest Fri day, September 2#. at the age of 44 years.
