Street Work to Be Speeded Up by Department Koutsky and City Engineer After Contractors to Com plete Work Before Win ter Weather Comes. City Commissioner Joseph Koutsky of the public improvements .depart ment and City Engineer Herman Heal, are after paving contractors to speed up work now under way. to re duce to a minimum the amount that «nust he held over to next season. Complaints have been received from citizens who believe that there has been unnecessary delay In finishing the work on North Twenty-fourth street and North Sixteenth street. Engineer Heal offered the follow ing explanation lu connection with tho Sixteenth street district, which extends from Wirt street to Commer cial avenue and thence west to Twentieth street and Ames avenue. “ThlR district would have been com pleted last year If the street railway had finished Its part of the work. In a situation of this kind the traction company usually resets Its rails and the city charter requires that the company shall pave between the rails. The regular work cannot be started until the street railway com pany Is out of the way. The street railway company re cently finished its work and the Na tional Construction company, which has the contract for paving, Is now at work and Is proceeding as fast as reasonably could be expected. This work will be completed before the last of October, about October 20, I would gay. Weather conditions af fect the progress of paving work. Car Company Not Finished. The city engineer stated that the street railway company has not fin ished Its work on Twenty-fourth street. Lake to Spaulding streets. He expects that in about 10 days this district will be ready for the contrac tor. J. H. McDonald. This district xtfllt haye a new base and brick sur face. “We have assurances that Mr. Mc Donald will get at this work as quickly as possible and If weather conditions are favorable, he may com plete the contract this fall. The com pletion this year, however. Is uncer ■ain. One side of the street, I am -ertain. will be finished and the other side will have a new base and prob ably new surface also. The contrac tor is anxious to get this district out of the way this fall. Maple Street Soon. The completion of the paving on Maple street, Sixty-second to Slxty seventh streets, by Murphy Construc tion company, was discussed In city council meeting last Tuesday. Com missioner Koutsky said he would hold up further estimates In favor of the Murphy company until they were working on Maple street. City Engi neer Beal stated that the Murphy company promised to be on this street within a few days, to place the sur face, the base already having been laid. •-T The other district of which there is some question is Vinton street. Twentieth to Twentyfourth streets. The street railway company is at work on this district now and as soon as they are out of the way, the National Construction company will complete its paving contract if the season has not been too far advanced for paving work. Mr. Beal is of the opinion that Vinton street will be completed this fall. Chess Players Dig in as Winter Approaches Do you play chess? Or at it? In our minds there is none. If The public expects Orchard & Wilhelm Co. to make good on all merchandise recommended in their advertisements and by their salespeople and herefore before recommendations are made the 1 cost or “comeback” is counted. In^ther words merchandise must be up to our standard before we can afford to guar antee it. 11 Authorized dealers in these two instruments are obliged to periodically satisfy the manufacturers that they are fully quali fied to rentier proper retail service. 11 For a period of one year after the purchase of a Victrola or a Brunswick the customer can call upon Orchard & Wilhelm Co. for adjustments relative to the mechanism of their instrument. If Sound-proof rooms provide ideal conditions for the choosing of a phonograph or the selection of new records. 1f A dignified and quiet atmosphere, together with a warm wel come, is_ always noticeable in the department. People who know phonographic music are there to wait on customers. If A large library of records is maintained at all times. If It costs no more to purchase your instrument under these ideal conditions, with the assurance of the fullest satisfaction than it does under those less pleasant. Our Budget Plan provides a really logical way for you to pay, and you enjoy your instrument at the same time.
