Excelsior Springs. >Io., Sept. 18.— "Old Shep,” a large collie dog belong ing to Francis Madden of Excelsior Springs Junction becamp the un crowned king of this city when he saved the life of Madden's nephew, Harold. The boy was visiting hl» uncle on the latter's farm and, like nil 16 year-old boys, had a desiro to ride. His uncle allowed him to ride one of the mules in after the day’s plow ing was finished and Harold started off, with 8hep at a trot beside him. But Missouri mules are Missouri mules, and the one Harold was rid ing was no exception. Perhaps it was frightened or perhaps It was the born perversity of the breed, but the animal started lunging. leaping upward, Shep grabbed the bridle between his teeth and held on until the mule became quiet and help came to release the boy, who had be come caught upon the harness hames. Young Madden was taken to a lo fcal hospital, where hla Injuries were treated and Shep was taken home to receive the best dinner he ever ate and the admiring and envious glances of common Excelsior Spring fhoun’s."
