Spooky Lights Scare Ranchers in Holt County Flashing, Floating Ball-Like Specters Seen Nightly Along Roads in Ranch Country. O’Neill, Neb., Sept. 8.—Page Sir Conau Doyle! Ranchmen of northern Holt county are being disturbed by ghostly manifestations which are getting on their nerves. They want someone who can talk "ghost" to discourse with the spirits, to ascer tain Just what the trouble is. Ghostly halls of luminosity which make their appearance soon after sundown and which float nbout the hills and ravines and along the roads of township 30, range 12, of northern Holt, until dissipated by the rising sun, have been phenomena of the vicinity for many years, each year growing more abundant, until now they terrorize the superstitious and make children afraid to be out after dark. Every night they bob and float around the fields and along the roads and they have been seen by hundreds this year. Even ‘Drys” See ’Em. The scene of the manifestations Is on the ranches of James Connolley, Thomas Gallagher and Ed Early, 1G miles north and west of O’Neill. Among those who have seen the lights are ministers, W. C. T. U. workers, lawyers, business men, non partisan leaguers, republicans and democrats. They are not jack-o-lan terns or will-o-the-wisps, scientists Who have viewed them declare, lie cause th6 nature of the soil of the ■t’lcinity is not of the kind to cause such things. The lights, float about front four to 10 feet above the ground, are of a greenish tinge and are of about the Intensity of a dim auto light. To the ordinary individual they appear as balls of phosphorescent light, while the more imaginative declare they have form and shape. Nearly Cause Accidents. Autoists frequently have slowed down along the road and partially 'turned out, thinking that they were about to meet another car. Late one night, Dr. W. F. Finley of O’Neill, ie turning from a slek call, sharply brought his car to a stop and nearly went into a ditch when one of the lights suddenly appeared a short dis tance in front of him, only to see the . light go up in the air and float over the fence to a field beyond. Many ranchmen have got up at night when they saw lights about bnrns and corrals and thought rustlers were about. ' The roads about the fields in which the manifestations originate nightly ore thronged with auto parties to wit ness the displays and numbers have searched the bills and ravines afoot to discover if practical jokers were About and are convinced that such is not the case. ■ Older residents have known of the lights for 30 years or more and few Of them are disturbed, but all are seeking for an explanation of their cause. Are they ghosts, or does a Vast reesrvoir of natural and lumin ous gas underly the district.
