“Old Dobbin” Still Going Strong in p p Spite of MotorCars, Says Horseman "■Worscback Riding Gains in Favor While Old Buggy Horse Is Now a Relic. The horee Is not a vanishing species and has never been In any danger pf becoming extinct, according to Wayne Dlnsmore, secretary of the National Horse Association of Amer ica and a national authority on horses. Dlnsmore Is In Omaha to address the convention of the National Harness Manufacturers and Leather Goods Retailers. There were more horses and mules !n the United States In 1020 than ever before. With the business slump In that year came a marked falling off In the number of horses being bred and sold. But that slump Is past, and the horse, according to Mr. Dlns more, is beginning a phenomenal comeback as a draught animal. There are now 1,600,000 fewer horses and mules in use in cities on account of the competition of the motor trucks. Mr. Dlnsmore declares that the Horse Association of America has gathered figures from 100,000 owners of horses and mules which Indicate that on all hauls of less than 20 miles a day. horses and wagon are cheaper and more efficient than the motor truck. The old buggy horse, says Mr. Dins more, is gone, probably forever. But saddle horses are rapidly Increasing In numbers. In Chicago, the number of saddle horses has more than quad rupled in the laat four years. In fact, the automobile has been a friend to the saddle horse. Country and country house are now with f in easy reach of the office, so that business man can have his own stables nml go riding every morning if be chooses. Mr. Dinsmore says many business men find horseback rkilng more con genial even than golf. "Horseback riding is th^ one exer cise for which a busy man has time. It gives the maximum of exercise in the minimum of time" Many cities are responding to the return of the saddle hors# by laying out bridle paths In parks and forest preserves. Chicago has 176 miles of bridle paths, Boston 100, and Wash ington 75. Nebraska, says Mr. Dinsmore, Is c-ne of the leading states In its out put of horses and mules. Most of the animals bred here are shipped to the southern states. West Coast to Aid Wheat Sale Oregon and Washington Cities Interested in Buying Plan, Omalian Finds. Omaha’s “Buy wheat’’ plan has gained a host of enthusiastic sup porters even as far west as Portland, Ore., and Seattle, Wash,, according to A1 C. Scott, president of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, recently re turned from those cities. > "The Idea which Omaha adopted to . aid the farmer is commanding atten tion throughout the west," said Mr. Scott. “In several of the papers of Portland and Seattle th# story is given the front pa^e. "Business men whom I have seen are highly in favor of the plan, since wheat is one of the large products of the northwest.” Would Curb Radicalism. An Interview given by Mr. Scott appeared In one of the Seattle papers August 8. In It Mr. Scott declares that if the business man proves him !^»<^**the friend of the farmer, by buy ^ ing his products, the farmer would never turn to the radical element for necessary support. ”1 talked, also with a number of business men on a question nearer to , their own cities," said the president of the Omaha chamber, “which oc cupies almost as much of their thought as the wheat problem; It was about obtaining suitable farm land. "They have timber land and the output is large. When the land Is cleared of timber, the tree stumps re main. The farmer when he takes up the land must clear the acres hlm • self and this tends to make his pur chase smaller and the length of time to get his land in condition for cul tivation longer. Way to Increase Acreage. "One or two of the men weri hank er*. other* were lumber men anrl one was a coffee dealer. They admitted that If there was a state or county fund of some kind which would take care of the stump*, farmers would buy more land. "The crops they produce on the little patches they have cleared are good and if the acreage la Increased, their returns will be Increased in proportion." Mr. Scott declared that the whent movement should be a success, Judg ing from the response met with In the "Buy Nebraska Potatoes" campaign last year. ^^f.wjidge to Remain on Jolt. The officers, undaunted, procured wrenches, unscrewed the grease trap and recovered enough whisky to be used as evidence. They arrested Adell Hilliard and Barnard Thomas. At 3474 Rarimore avenue they ar rested Pasquale Fancuille and took a 40-gallon still, 700 gallons of mash and six gallons of whisky. It is Fancullie's second arrest.
