Adele Garrison “My Husband's Love’* The Way Mother Graham Was Won to Help Madge. Mother Graham did not wait for any answer to her ultimatum as to Junior’s sleeping quarters for the night, but with masterly strategy beat a retreat as soon as she had finished speaking, with the remark that she must see to the cleaning upstairs. I gave Katherine an appealing look as the door closed with emphasis be hind my doughty mother-ln law, and she crossed the room in answer to it, sat flown beside the sleeping hoy and put a professionally skillful hand on the little chap's forehead. "I shouldn't worry, Madge," she said, with such evident sincerity that my heart lightened. "I don't think he has experienced the slightest *!l from his exposure—we took such prompt measures to warm and soothe him. He Is in good shape now." "But will he he after tonight's per formance?" 1 asked bitterly. "That, of course, T cannot guaran lee," she returned, "hut if he does show any ill effects from it, we can get to work tomorrow morning promptly, and check anything trou blesome. Hush! The dragon Is re turning!" It was, indeed. Mother Graham, "primed for bear,” in the phrase ology of the old hunters. She swept In magnificently, her head high. “Margaret,” she demanded, may I ask why I am of so little importance in your estimation that I have to learn of Jim's experience with the boijtlogger by listening to the tale told! one hireling by another?" Madge Is Diplomatie. Kven Katherine’s professional com posure was not proof against this. She bent over the sleeping child with a strangled little cough, and pretend ed to be busy arranging the blanket which wrapped him. In the glare of my mother inlaw's direct gaze I had no such refuge, and I always shall bo proud of the quick ironing which I gave to my facial muscles as I met her eyes. "If you mean Katie's story to Mrs. Ticer," I said coolly, "it isn't the true one at all. I instructed her just what to say to Mrs. Ticer, but I reserved the truth for you and Katherine. I have had no opportunity as yet to relate it." She furled her sails immediately | aad came to anchor in the nearest chair. “Well, you can't say that any longer!" she said with a final fleet ing tartness, and then with eyes shin ing like those of an excited child, she listened to the story of our finding Jim bound and gagged, and of his experience with the bootlegger and the big man who had come to the rescue of the escaping criminal. "You’d Itetlpr Get Dinner.” But one thing I kept hack. I could not reveal Harry Underwood's iden tity either to Katherine or to Mother Graham. That was a matter for Kil lian’s ears alone, if, indeed, I ever confided the secret to anyone. Therefore, I said nothing of the raillery which Mr. Underwood had addressed to Jim as he tied him up. making it appear that the job was done in silence, nor did I mention i 1508 DOUGLAS STREET World Thmtrr Iliitldina ooo The Most Important Factor In the Present Tremendous Development of the AUTOMOBILE BUSINESS has been the practice of “trading in" for a new model year after year. A fine new watch that will last a lifetime costs no mors than a set of tires that will last a season. Consider the comparison. Have you given thought te applying this same effective idea to your watch? Instead of costly repairs to an old watch, why not trade It in on a new one? "I think I have a clue to the big man's identity," I finished with as important an air as I could manage. "There was someone like him, X am sure, on the lists of Lillian's sus pects in that last case of hers. There fore, I have asked Jim to give no hint of the second man in his account of the affair. I want him to keep as clear an Idea of the thing as possible and you know how easily confused he is. so please don’t ask him any questions about it. As for Katie, she knows only that we found .Jim tied up. Anything else she has patched up herself. My mother-in-law diew herself up haughtily. "1 am not in the habit of ques tinning the servants," she said icily. "Have you gulte finished all you have t5 tell?" "Uhl yes,” I said cheerily, then added with meek solicitude: "I do hope all this hasn't delayed the cleaning too much." "Don't get a stroke of apoplexy worrying over It.” she advised, and I gripped by rislbles firmly and held them in leash while she went on. "If I hadn't been right on my taps, there wouldn't have been a stroke of work done today. Everybody* been running around In circles, but I’ve managed to keep their nos's pretty steadily to the grindst^ie when I had them here, and they 11 be through the rooms now in less than half an hour. So you’d better get your dinner right away.
