Bandit Probed Vice in Omaha, Confession Says Archie E. P^ge Wanted for Attempted Bank Robbery, Hired by Pastor to Investigate. An 1,800-word confession was sign ed yesterday afternoon by Archie E. Page, held for Chicago and Peoria police on charges of bank robbery. In this confession Page admitted that he and three companions had attempted to rob a bank at Low Point, 111., and that they had taken refuge in flight to Omaha. He also admitted In his confession that since coming to Omaha he had been employed to investigate so-called vice conditions here. Employed to Investigate. In his statement he said that he, a man named E. A. Ruth, who had come with him from Peoria, and Superintendent Burnett of the Buel Detective agency hnd been employed by Rev D. E. Cleveland to Investigate vice and gambling in Omaha and that he had worked three days at $10 a day and expenses when police took 11m in custody. Hugh McCaffrey, nationally known Burns detective agency operative, ar rived in Omaha yesterday morning from Chicago to identify Page, as the man sought in connection with the robbery of the Banta Bros, bank at Low Point, June 5. Page admitted it was his car which was found abandoned near the scene of a second robbery the same night, but claims himself the victim of cir cumstance. Butler Atttacks Minister. Rev. Mr. Cleveland has admitted Page was working for him r through the Buell detective agency, investigating vice conditions in Oma ha, prior to his arrest. Police Commissioner Butler accused the Rev. Mr. Cleveland of seeking by this means to bring about) his political downfall by collecting evi dence of law violations and then go ing to the governor with a request for Butler's removal. Cleveland denies any political motive. He declares he reported vio lations he found to Butler but was refused a plainclothes man. Then lip hired men from the Buell agency. The pastor denied ho was acting as a representative of the committee of 6,000 or the Ministerial union. Phone Business Gains in State Inrrrase in Profits and Service Shown in Reports to Rail Commission. Special Dispatch to The Omaha Bee. Lincoln, July 26.—Recapitulation of nnuual reports presented to the state railway commission by all telephone companies operating Jn Nebraska . shows a general Increase in business profits. The Northwestern Bell Telephone company which serves Omaha and half of the area of the state reports an inrreftso of $69,000 In net earnings over the previous year. The total earnings this year were $667,000. Book costs of this company was placed at $18,352,217 against $17,358, 000 a year ago. Operating revenue was $4,778,901 this year against 14,446,734 a year ago. Operating ex pense was $3,848,561 last year against 84.091,621 this year. Totals subscribers on a*ll lines served by the company in Nebraska w as 101, 580 this year against 99,103 a year ago. Number of stockholders in the com pany is 18 In Nebraska, according to the report. Totaling all the companies nitrat ing in Nebraska they show a total hook cost of $32,949,258 with a net in come of $1,563,933 and a capital stork of $9,497,992. Stockholders and own ers In Nebraska number 19,988. Divi dends paid out approximated $495,000. / There were 33 of the 220 companies in the state which operated at a loss. ___ Two McCook Banks Are Consolidated Special DUpntrh to The Omaha Bee. Lincoln, July 26.—Consolidation of the Citizens1 .state bank of McCook with the Fanners’ and Merchsnts' of the same city was announced too^» by K\ C. Knudson, secretary of department, of trade and commerce. Difficulties of the first bamed hank were given by Mr. Knudson as a rea^ son for the consolidation. "Preparations for the consolidation were made by the guarantee fund commission and Van K, PeteAion, sec retary of the commission, is at Mc Cook now handling details,'’ Mr. Knudson said. Following is the last report of the condition of the Farmers’ and Mer chants’ hank: Deposits, $325,225.76; loans, $357,737.75; rash, $34,686.31; re discount, $28,000; bills payable, $33,790. Hay Springs, Neb., July 26.—The west part of'Sheridan and the east part of lames county were swept by ii severe rain and wind storm, accom panied by some hail, doing great dam age to growing crops. Old settlers say It was the Worst storm of this kind In the history of the county. Practically all bridges In tills vicinity were swept away, as the small streams Iternme raging torrents. On account of the telephone lines being down, and the almost Irnpass able condition of the roads, very little can be learned of the damages. Is believed that the loss of hogs P^duo to this storm will run Into the hundreds. American Killctl in Mexico El Paso, Tex , July 26.—It. K. Special Dispatch to The Omuha llec. Lincoln, July 26.—William U. Riley, jr., IT, claiming to be the son of the pastor of the First Baptist church in Minneapolis, was arrested early this morning by county and state officers at Waverly. Riley was driving a motor car said to have been stolen at Beatrice Wednesday night. In a confession Riley told of rob beries in Kansas, Missouri, Wisconsin and Nebraska extending over a period of two weeks. He also confessed to being a deserter from the army. Ills story told to officers follows: "I quarreled with my parents and left, home on Christmas day, 1921 and enlisted In the cavalry at Fort Riley, Kan., In February of that year. “With four others, Corporal Kemp, William Ross, George Laden and Frank Tarengoio I deserted July 5, 1923. We fled to Topeka, Kan., where we broke into the Pine oil station, taking gasoline and money. “From there we went to Kansas City, St. Joseph and then to Wiscon sin, committing robberies on our way. At Beloit, Wis., 1 got mad at my companions, drew a revolver on them and ordered them out of our stolen car. That's the last I have seen of them. “Meantime T had written to my brother at Manhattan. Kan., ami he persuaded me to rettirn to Fort Riley. I abandoned that car at St. Paul and my brother took me to Man hattan. 1 began to get afraid of the guard house and ran away, going first to Beatrice ^nml was finally caught at Waverly."
