Bryan Reports Big Saving bv P j Ruse on Gravel Kfc _ Price Is Lowered When Move Is Made to Open State Pit at Ashland. Special Dispatch to The Omaha Bee. t.incoln, July 6.—Governor Bryan asserted today he had saved the state $100,000 in price of road contracts as a result of a threat made to gravel men that unless they lowered the price of their product the state would open its pit at Ashland. "Thq state engineer and myself merely went to Ashland, viewed the pit and made inquiries of the Bur lington as to how much a spur to the pit would cost," the governor said. "Immediately gravel men reduced their prices.” This gravel pit was purchased a number of years ago by George E. Johnson, state engineer, at a time when It was declared private inter ests were endeavoring to gain con trol of all gravel pits in the state. At that time the democrats couldn’t see anything that smacked of good business in the deal, and the McKelvie administration was made the subject of much criticism for making the purchase. In fact, the Tuirchase of this pit was one of the principal charges of mismanagement launched against the former adminis tration at the time the road investi gation was under way, a few months prior to the election. "It is probable we wiU open up the pit, providing the Burlington doesn't hold us up on the price of a spur." the governor said. "The price quoted to us for this work by the Burlington is twice moiw than en gineers of the state department es ^•iimated it would cost.” Marriage Licenses.
