Police Commissioner Butler an nounced Tuesday that he will take up with Omaha business men in the near future a proposition to light Omaha's alleys by popular subscrip tion. He says installation of one or two arc lights in every block of alley would be not only a protection to the merchants whose shops abut on the alley, but a protection to cllti zens and to policemen as well. "As things are now." he explained, ‘'a gunman can hide behind a ha nana crate or anything else that happens to be handy, and take a pot shot at a policeman passing the alley, and nobody would know about it until they found the policeman." He stated that In approaching the business men. he will not work through the Chamber of Commerce. He plans to appoint some reputable business man to form a committee which will lay the matter before the Omaha merchants. Mr. Butler esti mates the cost of the plan at about }|2 a year for each merchant. He has not yet named the man who will head the committee, but said he will do so shortly.
