Dear Miss Fairfax: I would ask her to marry me only she is always saying how she hates this city—and I have to stay here. Do you think she would ever like it—or should 1 give up all thoughts of her? She has been here now over six months. ANXIOUS. My dear boy. if she loves you the city will be clothed in different rai ment after you have said the magic word. You say she has been lonely and has felt that she mattered very little In the general rush and scram ble. It Is Indeed bewildering— beyond words. And to the girl who comes from some pretty town of open spaces and Streets where you meet people instead of jamming past them In the everlasting struggle to get somewhere—to such a girl any city seems like a bad dream. But sud denly let a fairy prince appear and out of all that multitude of scrambling humanity beckon to her castle. So. never fear, dear prince, but Just gently offer her your heart and hand and see what a difference it will make. It Isn’t the place in which we live, but the people who abide there with us. Working After Marriage. Dear Miss Fairfax: I have gone about with a girl for five years, and I finally have asked her to marry me, but there is a barrier between us. You see, I am earning 125 per week, and I do not think that Is sufficient nowa days. I have explained this all to her and she Is willing to continue her own work. I do not approve of U".at idea, so kindly give me your opinion. M. L. There Is no reason why your wife shouldn't continue working—or start working—in order to be a real partner. If she can contribute her share and help you manage carefully, then you can risk marrying. But un less you have prospects and belief in your willingness to work and forge ahead, you should not ask a woman to handicap you—or herself—by marrying on your salary. Patching I p a Quarrel. Dear Miss Fairfax Two weeks ago I had a quarrel with my sweetheart. ; 1 was in the wrong. I have waited till now and he has not as yet made any advances towards a reconciliation. What shall X do? Shall [ make any attempt at a reconciliation:' PERPLEXED. You acknowledge that you were in the wrong when you quarreled. Now why continue to Fie "in the wrong #' Do' the right thing—and the sweet and generous one. too—and tell him how' sorry you are for the things which came temporarily between you.
