Charles L. Trimble, N. B. Updike, Everett Buckingham, C. J. Lane of the Union Pacific, W. B. Tagg, M. C. Peters, W. Cox, T. ,C?. Byrne and E. P. Peck spoke for the Omaha fol "owers. Charles R. Gardner, "Sam son,” sang. Speakers for the visitors were M. J. Konin, secretary of the Nebraska state racing commission; Ben Jones, Parnell, Mo.; George Schilling, pub licity director; J. H. Barton, Spring field, 111.; J. McKay, Reno, Nev.; George Elrick and E. Linnell, San Francisco; C. E. Groves, F, C. Mar net and W. Simms of San Diego, Cal.; Dr. C. P. Smeed, Ralston, Neb.; W. M. Cain, Louisville, Ky.; William Bondas, Latonia, Ky. Unanimous in Praise. The visiting horsemen were unan imous in their praise of their recep tion in Omaha, the racing facilities and only regretted the fact that rain had made the track slow. Maj. Gen. George B. Duncan and staff were guests. Col. Frank Hal stead, staff officer, spoke on “Spark Plug and the Remount Service of the United States Army." Subscription of more than $1,500 was made up among those present to be later increased to $'J,500 for the purchase of a thoroughbred stallion under the provisions of the army sys tem. General Duncan spoke for the gov ernment in sponsoring the Omaha pur chase. Peters in Charge. Mr. Peters was appointed to care for the selection of the animal from the suggestions offered by the army of ficials, and also to obtain voluntary contributions to swell the subscrip tion fund. Mr. Trimble, secretary of Ak-Sar Ben races, said he was satisfied with the progress made in Omaha races since three years ago. "Then," said Mr. Trimble, "we had a mediocre card. Now we have en tries which run on the best tracks in the country. The Daily Haclng Form of Chicago is now carrying Omaha in the same space it devoted to La tonia, Louisville, Havana, Belmont Park, Tiajuana and New Orleans. "Our officials are the best that can be secured and the fact that they are recognized is shown in the type of the entries.” The horsemen expressed their grat itude to the stockyards company for the opportunity of getting together and meeting as friends and not as merely business associates. An angry mother few can face; Avoiding her la no diagrace. —Vowier the Bob Cat. An Exciting Moment. Littlest Bear ho shocked by the discovery that Yowler the Bob Cat could climb a tree as well jis she could that for a second or two she just clung to her branch and stared with unbelieving eyes. Then she realized that she was no longer safe. With a cry of fright she turned and scrambled up. crying all the xvay. Up and up and up she went until she was in the very top of that tree. Up and up and up came Yowler the Bob Cat. Yowler was nervous. He kept stopping every few feet to listen and to look anxiously for signs of Mother Bear. He felt sure that that little bear was lost, but there was no knowing how near Mother Bear might be, and if she should hear that little Bear’s cries she would come in a hur ry. How Yowler did wish that little Bear would stop crying! Now. Littlest Bear was so small that she could climb up where the top of that tree was very slender and small. There she hung on with the claws of all four feet, and cried as only a frightened little Bear can cry. Yowler didn't dare climb quite high enough to reach her. He was too big. He stopped Just a little be low her, and tried to think of some way of making her let go. Suddenly there was an angry "Woof, woof" just below, and the sound of great claws digging Into the trunk of that tree. One glance down was enough for Yowler. There was Mother Bear coming up that tree at a rate that was astonishing in one so hig! One look w-as enough. Yowler started down, and he went down twice as fast as he had come up. He ran out on the first Mg branch he came to. Just as Mother Bear reached that branch Yowler made a flying leap and caught a branch of the next tree. There he hung for a moment, cainly trying to pull himself up on It. Then he slipped and dropped. Fortunately for him there was a big branch Just be low him. and this one he succeeded in holding onto. He pulled himself up on it. and then with a screech of rage and disappointment he climbed down from that tree and disappeared the instant he reached the ground. No. sir. the couldn't get down to Mother Bear quick enough. She forgot that she might be punished. She forgot that she had run away. She forgot every thing but the desire to get right close to Mother Bear. Mother Henr didn't wait for her. She promptly started down the tree herself. After her scrambled Llttlest Bear as fast as she could, and she was whimpering again. But this time the whimpers were little whimpers of Joy. l.ittlest Bear didn't Intend to let Mother Bear out of her sight again as long as she lived. Anyway, that Is the way she felt Just then.
