Lorenna Marcellia Wins Second Running of Ak-Sar-Ben Queen’s Plate at Ak Track --- J My Reverie Romps Home Second and Second Thoughts Comes in for Third Place Money in Big Race Bv RAI.PH WAGNER. ___ EAVING the barrier slowly, sprinting into the lead as the field passed the half-mile post, turning toward home in the lead and finish ing in a hard drive—that is the' story of Lorenna Marcellia’s victory in the second running of the Ak-Sar-Ben Queen’s Plate, a six-furlong event run yesterday afternoon at Ak track, in the presence of one of the largest crowds that has ever attended a spring meeting. The victory of the Queen’s Plate win ner was most convincing. As tne barrier was sprung the pride of the Jones-Updike stable got away in fifth position. Jockey F. Horn had the mount on Lorenna and he immedi ately set to work. At the half post the 3-year-old daughter of Seth Cutaneious was showing the way home, but as the field neared the three-quarters mark, Second Thoughts, an other Jones-Updike runner, passed her stablemate, only to give up the lead to Lorenna as they entered the stretch. Once headed for home, the daughtr of Seth again went to the front, where she remained under a hard drive to win by one and one-half lengths in front of My Reverie, one of the two G. Drumhiller entries. My Reverie Second. One length behind My Reverie was Second Thought, while only a scant head separated Ten Buttons, the C. B. Irwin mudder, for show money. Wolf's Cry, the good-looking G. TJrumhiller 4-year-old, was two lengths behind Ten Buttons. Wild Heather, Alleden and Harry D finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. Harry It., the Irwin sprinter who has 15 consecutive victories under his belt, was good for only part of the journey. Harry broke fast and set the pace and then quit. The race was run in 1:17 2-5 over a track made heavy and holding by the the recent rains. The time was four seconds slower than the mark hung tip last year by Money, who covered the Queen's Plate distance last June in 1:13 2-5 over a track lighting fast. Yesterday's winner was Ben Jones' second Queen's Plate victory in as many years. Last season Ben saddled Money and Wednesday he saw his colors carried to another victory in the Queen's race. Loren ria Marceilia’s victory yester day added 112.00 to the Jones-t,'pdike siable. The race was for a purse of $1,500 and the Queen's Plate. I'nbeaten as Two-Year-Old. As a 2-year-old. Lorenna Marcellia "as unbeaten. She won every rare her owner entered her in down at Havana, but when she was nom. nated for some eastern tracks the daughter of Seth broke down and had to be shipped to the Jones stock farm ai Parnell, Mo. Once on the farm, end under the eagle eye of Ben Jones, trainer, Lorenna Marcellia quickly rounded into fine trim. The i suit was Lorenna's triumph yester lay. Lorenna and Second Thoughts, coupled at the Jones-Updike entry, vent to the post second choice, while the G. Drunihiller entry of Wolf’s fry and My Reveries were the favor ite. C. B. Irwin's Harry D and Ten Buttons were third choice. Wild Heather was a 7 to 1 shot and Alleden a 17 to 1 play. The mighty Abudane, the pride of the C. B. Irwin barns, was scratched when his owner saw that the footing was not to his liking. IJelante. the B. F. McClain crack, and Judge Pryor of Col. R. L. Baker's stable, were also scratched. At Post Iamg Time. The field of eight starters was an even six minutes at the post due to the actions of Harry D and a few of the others. But when Starter Me Knight jerked the webbing, the field got off to a pretty good start. Harry D showed in front in the first few strides, with Ten Buttons. Alleden and Second Thoughts right on his heels. They had not gone far when the white silks above the chestnut filly appeared in the front. Ix>renna Mareellla was a head to the good at the half-pole with Second Thoughts right behind. Harry D had dropped , b<wk to third and My Reverie had come up from a had start to fourth position. Wolf's Cry was fifth, hav ing passed Ten Buttons and Alleden. Joeksy Horn kept Lorenna In the lead until Just before they reached the quarter pole where Second Thoughts forged to the front with a burst of speed. Ixtrenna was close behind and then followed Harry D,, Wolf's Cry and My Reverie. As they rounded the last turn and pointed their breezers for the race down the stretch. Horn whispered a few words of encouragement Into the ears of Lorenna and the daugther of Seth Immediately went to the front. Second Thoughts was second with 1 Thursday s Ak Entries. Fifth Day. My Reverie Gains. Down the track they came. The en tire grandstand seemed to let out one big yell as the field came near enough for the spectators to distinguish the runners. If Jockey Horn figured on a hard ride down to the wire he figured right, for It was all the daugh ter of Seth could do to keep in the lead. My Reverie was gaining stead ily and coming up from third posi tion, forged ahead of Second Thoughts and was determined to give Lorenna a run for the $1,200. Ten Buttons was going strong and gain ing on Second Thoughts. Horn was giving Loranna the ride of his life. He urged, urged and urged the daughter of Seth on and Lorenna seemed to know Just whnt all of Horn's urging was for, because the Jones-Updike filly seemed to strain every ligament in her well de veloped body as she crossed the imaginary line a winner. My Reverie was doing her best and managed to outstay Second Thoughts by a good length. Second Thoughts tried hard to catch My Reverie before they crossed the line, but it was all the daughter of Ultimus could do to win show position from Ten Buttons. When the Queen's Plate winnei came to the Judges' stand, the grand stand gave the Jones-Updike filly a rousing ovation, and after posing for a flock of camera men. stood still while Mrs. Gertrdue Stout Queen of Ak Sar-P.en presented the Joint owners of Lorenna with a beautiful floral horse shoe and Lorenna seemed to know Just what was going on. Chicago Evens Series, Beating Giants in Fog Aldridge Holds ^ orld Title Holders to Three Hits in Spirited Contest. Chicago. June 6.—Chicago hit Art Nehf. alar lefthander, hard today, smashing out four doubles, all of which figured in a 6 to-1 victory over New York, and evened up the series. Vic Aldridge, on the other hand, held the world's champions to three hits, one a homer by Snyder, which saved the Giants from a shutout. A thick fog off Ijake Michigan, the first on record at Cubs park, during playing time, hung over the field, and made it so dark at times that it was impossible to see beyond the infield. Several times it was necessary for the umpires to confer as to whether balls batted to the outfield had been caught. In the third inning, Otto Vogel, Uni versity of Illinois player with the Cubs, sent a high fly into the dark ness in right field, and reached sec ond base. Pep Young rushed to the Infield and claimed he had caught the ball. The two umpires conferred and gave Young the verdict. A few in nings later Young rushed in and scooped a drive, rolling over as he did so. Again he claimed the ball had been caught. Another consultation of umpires, but this time Young was overruled.
