Fewer Children Are Now Dying, Savs Undertaker ¥ President of Funeral Direc tors’ Body Meeting Here As signs Sanitation for De crease in Deaths. Elimination of disease by better sanitation and the continued develop meiit of the standards of the profes sion, are among the aims of Ne braska funeral directors who are at tending the 38th annual convention of the Nebraska Funeral Directors’ association at the Auditorium. President Walter Livingston of Hastings commented on the absence of a large number of small caskets from the display. "It means that children are not dying with such frequency as they used to die," he explained. "There aren't nearly as many children's cas kets sold as .in years past. "There wouldn’t have been the epi demic of influenza, for example, if present methods of undertaking pre vailed a few years ago. New enj balming methods kill the germs; fun eral directors are now licensed, and funerals are not allowed to be public unless all danger of disease has Been eliminated." Total exhibits at the convention are valued at JIOO.OOO. The convention will last three days. Thirtyflve applicants for li censes as funeral directors took ex aminations at the University of Ne braska college of medicine Monday and Tuesday. If you like The Bee, till your neighbor* about it. Fremont, Neb.. June 6. — After examining nearly BO prospective jurors, 12 Fremont men were finally chosen to act as the jury in the trial of Andrew Johnson, fi5, charged with murder in the first degree in killing William Jurglng at North Bend last October, during a drinking spree. The Jury was taken to North Bend late this afternoon to view the scene of the killing at Johnson’s home. Member of Party Gone. In the opening ■ arguments It was brought out that James Herbert, 70, a third member of the fatal drinking party, has completely disappeared. Efforts to locate him as a witness have been futile, both the state and defense attorneys told the Jury. Attorney Frank Dolezal. for the de fendant, indicated that the killing of Johnson may have been commuted ‘by Herbert, by his own hand or in an accident. He insisted that there was no motive for the crime and that Johnson, in a state of stupor when found following the shooting, was un able to tell what took place. Tell* of Quarrel. Jurging s statement before his death described a quarrel with John son. When he refused to quit John son’s home the latter secured a gun from the next rooiji and fired at Jurging, according to the state's at torneys. The defense attorney In his state ment to the jury said that he would Introduce testimony tending to prove that Johnson, when under the in-j fluence of liquor, lost control of his mind. He also intimated that an at tempt would be made to prove that the gun used in the shooting did not belong to Johnson. Dolezal scored the county officials for falling to de tain Herbert, the only witness to the alleged shooting. First Testimony Wednesday First testimony probably will be taken Wednesday morning, when the trial is resumed. The following men make uji the jury: Vivian Slogett, L. McFadden, I,ar* C. Jensen. H. J. Boggs, Ed E. Jensen, C. E. West, Andrew J. Holt* man, N. M. Hansen, Ira Parsons, An derson, Herman, Suhr, Joseph Sterher.
