Degrees Awarded to Class of 204 at Creighton Uni James L. McIntosh Tells Graduates That Work Is Solvent Needed to Ban ish Difficulties. At th* 33d annual commencement of Creighton university, 204 young men and women were presented de grees Saturday morning during im pressive ceremonies In the university gymnasium. In his introductory remarks. Presi dent John F. McCormick, S. J., stated that this was the largest class in the history of the university. He stated that the responses received during the recent building campaign amounted to $275,000 pledged, with more in prospect. He expressed the belief that the extensive building program will be started next year and that Creighton will press on to greater achievements. The commencement exercises were opened with an academic procession, followed by part songs rendered by the University Glee club. Chief Justice Andrew M. Morrissey of the state supreme court adminis tered the oath to the law graduates. Degrees Conferred. ‘‘You young women and men of these graduating classes are about to enter upon the greatest scientific, In dustrial and commercial age of the world," was a statement by James L. McIntosh of Sidney, Neb., in an ad dress to the graduates. “My advice to you is to observe all that Is honorable as you go forth from this felicitous event to your various activities of life. America Is not made; It Is In the making. We have our responsibilities and we must not shirk them. We must maintain the Ideals of the founder of our coun try. The world needs the intelligence and the high idealism of these gradu ating classes." Work Solves Difficulties. Mr. McIntosh referred to a present day misunderstanding among men and nations: of a universal distemper, and a wellnlght universal aversion to work. "Work.” he said, "is the solvent of difficulties. Work and correct habits are masters of the situation. The world needs industry. “There Is an obsession for material things as against spiritual interests. We need a genuine religion, a genu ine regard for each other, which is the basis of real manhood and womanhood. "I really believe we are on the threshold of a spiritual awakening. There are indications to warrant that belief. East week Judge E. H. Gary, speaking to the board of directors of the United States Steel corporation, made a public avowal of the efficacy of religion. We need a common understanding one with the other." Degrees were conferred on the fol lowing graduates: Ccll-ge of Art*. \< . :k ok arts. With • li.im Harry. A B Hit i l l.OR OK ARTS. Fred I. Father Kleins Selfishness That Didn’t Pay. By THORNTON W. BURGESS. When comes the final reckoning day You'll find that selfishness won t pay. —Littlest Bear. One day as Mother Bear led the triplets through the Green Forest she stopped abruptly and began to sniffy The three little cubs did Just as she did. But though they sniffed and sniffed, they didn’t smell anything particularly interesting. However, it was clear that Mother Bear did. "You stay right here,” Mother Bear commanded. "You stay right here until I come back.” "Yes'm,” said Brother. "Yes'm,” said Sister. But Littlest Bear didn't say any thing at ail. Once more Mother Bear warned them to remain right where they were. Then she shuffled off, and in a few moments they heard her rip ping and tearing at something with her great claws. In a few minutes she began to growl and snarl, but they could still hear her tearing something open with her great claws. Then, though she still continued to growl and snarl, she began to make sounds which told the little Bears' that she had found something very good to eat, something very good in deed. The little Bears stood up and vain ly tried to see what Mother Bear was doing. They were very, very curious. Then a Merry Little Breese came along and tickled their three little noses with an odor wholly new to them, but which filled them with a great longing to taste the fhing from which that odor came. Their mouths began to water. They sniffed and sniffed and sniffed and sniffed. The more they sniffed the more it seemed to them that they Just couldn't wait there any longer. "Mother Bear has found something good and isn't going to give us any. I'm going straight over there and get some," declared Littlest Bear. "You better not," replied Brother. "You remember what Mother Bear said." "Mother Bear will call us when she is ready for us.” said Sister wisely. Littlest Bear said nothing. She be gan to walk around uneasily. All the time she was thinking and her thoughts were selfish thoughts. Yes, sir, her thoughts were selfish thoughts. "I never smelled anything so good in all my life," thought she. "Mother Bear probably Is gobbling up most of it, and when she calls us there won't be much left. I am going to get there first. That is what I am going to do. I am going to get there first. I'll go a little nearer, so that when she does call us I'll be the first one to get there." I.ittlest Rear went nearer. Her mouth watered more and more So I.ittlest Bear went a little nearer to where she could hear Mother Bear at wotk. The delicious odor was stronger and, being stronger, It seemed still more delicious. Littlest Hear went nearer. Her mouth watered more and more. She looked behind her to see if Brother and Sister were following. They were not. they were right where Mother Bear had left thftn I.ittlest Bear chuckled. It was 'a selfish chuckle. "I'll get there first," said she to herself, and moved on a little further. Without meaning to. she stepped out of some hushes in plain view of Mother Bear had Mother Bear been looking that way. But Mother Benr wasn't looking. She was ripping open a hollow tree trunk which hnd fallen, stopping now and then to slap frantically at something and all the time snarl'ng and growling. There was a strange humming aound. Suddenly that humming grew louder. The air all aliout I.ittlest Rear seemed full of swiftly moving Inserts. And then It seemed as If u dozen red hot little needles were tabbed into the face of I.ittlest Bear. With a yell of pain she started to run and »he made the mistake of runnlrtg straight toward Mother Bear. With every jump she felt more .if those sharp little pains. t tfilt 'i>i*nxue,i) The next story: "The Bittl*st Bear's Hard Besson." Adele Garrison “My Husband's Love” The Method Madge Kmployed to Help Leila. I spent a moat uncomfortable hour during the dinner which I had pre pared for the Durkees with Hess Dean's aid. There was nothing the matter with the viands. Indeed, we were the recipients of many exag gerated compliments upon our culi nary skill from Alfred, while little Mrs. Durkee and Della voiced their approval in no uncertain terms. Hut the shadows of two unpleasant and difficult tasks loomed before me, rob bing me of my appetite and Increasing the tension of my nerves. Before the evening ended I must fulfil my promise to Mrs. Durkee that I would tell Alfred and Della of Dr. Koxham'a verdict concerning an oper ation for her, thus sparing her the ordeal of revelation, and I meant alao to fln-2 out Just what mischief Bess Dean was engaged In mannfacturln.'f. That there was some secret between her and Alfred which Bella did not shaie, I was sure as 1 was that the attraction which Bess had for Alfred he|,( nothing in It to give Della cause for real uneasiness. I came to these conclusions at the close of the dinner, during which I furtively watched Alfred and Hess Dean That he admired the brilliant, sparkling girl Immensely, was plainly to be seen, but that his reaction to her was one of mentality rather than of the emotions, was also evident. On the other hand, Alfred's tender pro tecting love for his fragile wife was to be seen in every word and glance toward her. What Madge Feared. I suddenly remembered Lillian's trenchant words to me upon an oc casion when Dicky's friendship with Edith Fairfax was causing me un easiness. ''Remember," she had said, "the wife has the game in her own hands if she only chooses to play it." But would Leila play the game, or would she spoil everything by betray-1 ing the jealousy of Bess Dean which I guessed waa racking her? Nothing could so surely anger and disgust Al fred, for with the usual masculine blindness to the faults of a pretty and clever woman, he patently considered Bess a friend of the family whose af fronting would be a cardinal sin. That Leila could not stand the strain of pretense long, I was sure as I caught the feverish- brightness of her eyes and her heightened color, when after dinner, Alfred carried her Into the living room and deposited her In an easy armchair before the big fireplace Her eyes did not leave him while he coaxed the logs into a brighter blaze, and his mother. Be«s and I drew our chairs close to the fire. Ixtok at That Clock!" "It isn't fair!" I said to myself hot ly, noting the cool insouciance of Bess Dean's manner, and stirred for Leila against my former colleague as I never had been for myself. The two women were more unequally pit ted in the contest. Bess Dean was a woman of the world, brilliant, cool, calculating, inordinately vain, and while not really wicked, I had no hes fancy in dubbing her unprincipled In many respects. Leila Durkee, on the other hand, possessed neither Bess Dean's men tallty nor her poise. She was also without a trace of the other wom an's unpleasant traits, for Leila is the sweetest, gentlest creature In the world, as Incapable of a mean or underhanded action as she is of fight ing her own battles unaided. She is one of the women who need pro 'ecting all her life, and her hus band was lavishing that protection upon her The citadel of her life had seemed Impregnable until the Inor dinate vanity and diabolical clever ness of Bess Dean had made a breach in the wall at the only place where Alfred could not come to her aid. With grim determination, masked by smiles, I kept the conversation in my own hands through the hours following our dinner. I knew that Leila would not mind any exchange of badinage between Alfred and me, and I proceeded to Indulge in what little Mrs. Durkee declared to he a most outrageous flirtation with her son. In my mother in law's parlance, I did not permit Bess Dean to "get a ward in ed are way*.” "I declare. 'Leila," she said with a twinkle In her eye which betrayed to me how thoroughly she was enjoying Bess Dean's discomfiture. "I wouldn’t stand the way Madge is carrying on with Alfred. I only wish the Dicky bird were here. I'd put a flea In his ear Just wait until I see him, that's all!" ■'We have a working agreement.” Alf explained lazily. "Every time one of us la out of town, the other has a solemn obligation to keep all other rtlrtatloua admirer* away. I don't know any hetter way than to flirt with the charming lady myeelf.” Besa Dean roae to her feet abruptly. "Look at that clock:” ehe ejacu lated. "Thia charming lady haa to be moving, for school keeps tomorrow.” She looked at Alfred significantly, or so I thought, and I caught my hreath.
