9 Grain Exchanges Are Designated by Government Purpose of Futures Act to Curb Big Speculators From Improperly Influencing Market Explained. Washington, May 17.—Under the Grain Futures act of September 21, 1922, nine grain exchanges, after re vising their bylaws to conform with ila provisions, have been designated by the secretary of agriculture as < on tract markets to continue trading in grain futures. In October, imme diately after the passage of the act, ihe I,os Angeles Grain Exchange, the grain division of the San Francisco < hamber of Commerce, the Milwau kee Chamber of Commerce and the open hoard of Cihcago applied for designation as contract markets and were so designated by the secre tary. Bater the constitutionality of the act was tested in the courts and no more applications were made until the act was upheld by the United States supreme court April 16, 1923. Since that date the following exchanges have been designated ns contract mar kets: Minneapolis Chamber of Com merce, Chicago Board of Trade. Kan sas City Board of Trade, Duluth Board pf Trade and the St. Bouia Merchants exchange. The list of designated exchanges included the principal grain markets on which there has bpen trading In futures. The Toledo Produce exchange, one of the oldest grain exchanges, decided not to make application for designa tion for trading In grain futures. It i.« the largest market for timothy seed and clover seed, which do not come under the meaning of the act, and the exchange will continue to deal in fu tures of these commodities. Othet grain markets in various cities deal in cash grain for which no designation is required. "The Department of Agriculture has found a quite general misunderstand ing of the scope and purpose of the Grain Futures act. Many persons seem to think it will stop specula tion in grain by all persons outside the grain trade; in other words, the general public. The truth is the act places no check on any Individual in buying, or selling short, for ordinary specula tion. One of the chief purposes of the act is to curb manipulation and opera tions of big professional speculators who may by their trading Improperly Influence prices. It also makes It possible for thp government to demand that the desig nated exchanges take precautions to prevent their members from issuing false or misleading statements which might have a tendency to Influence prices or trading. The grain futures administration of the Department of Agriculture has already established in Chicago and Minneapolis ofifees in charge of super visors, who keep in close touch with transactions on those markets. Supreme Court Urged to Advance Sugar Hearing r e — Motion Says Early Decision on Government's Power “Vital to Welfare of Amer ican Public.*’ By I nlversul Service. Washington, May IT—An early de cision on the power of the federal government to afford protection ngainst speculation in the necessaries of life is "vital to the welfare of the American public." This is the basis on which the De partment of Justice urges the su preme court to advance the appeal from the New York district court's denial of an injunction against the New York Coffee and Sugar Exchange and the New York Coffee and Sugar Clearing association, to stop futures trading in sugar. The motion to advance the appeal was completed today and will be filed with the supreme court as soon as It can be printed, probably Friday, it was announced by Acting Attorney General A. T. Seymour, who has per sonal charge of the case. Formal pres entation of the plea that the appeal be "set down for argument on the earliest day convenient to the court" will he made on Monday by Solicitor General James M. Beck. Department of Justice officials de clined to comment on the possibility of decision before the supreme court recesses for the summer on June 11. They stated emphatically, however, that If the court should so Indicate, they would be ready to argue the matter at once. The petition to advance points out that if the government is without power to deal w-ith the situation under existing law, this fact should be fi nally determined, so congress may take Uf) the question of enacting ad ditional legislation when it is con vened in December. Hill Talks at Omaha Science Church Member of Board of Lecture ship Speaks on “God's Revelation of Spiri tual Healing." Judge Frederick C. Hill, C. S., Clin ton, III., member of the board of lec tureship of the Mother Church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Bos ton, Mass., gave a lecture on “Chris tian Science: God's Revelation of Spir itual Healing,” in the First Church of Christ. Scientist. Omaha. Thursday night. The lecture will be, repeated tonight. Judge Hill said: "Christian Science is, as its name Implies, essentially Christian and its practice being predicated upon abso lute law, it brings healing from sick ness and deliverance from sin. This | being the case, Christian Science, ns j a great religious movement must be j based upon a revelation of the teach j Inga and practical truths presented j in the Bible. Best there be confusion in the thought of those who have never investigated this subject, I as sure you at the outset that Christian Scientists use' for their study and in all their church services one Bible authority, that of the King James version of the Old and the New Testa ments. "Christian Science as it is presented to you and to me came through the discovery by Mary Baker Eddy of the operation of absolute, fixed spir itual law. In an impartial investi gation of Christian Science it is de sirable, in fact quite essential, to know somewhat of its discoverer and founder. I feel quite safe in assum ing that my early experience in the investigation of this subject is simi lar to yours. My first Impulse was to inquire, ‘Who is Mrs. Eddy?’ ‘What did she discover and found'.” The an swer to these questions is simple and helpful. "Mrs. Eddy was a devout and lov able New England woman, deeply in terested in the Bible. Early In child hood she displayed a keen perception of the underlying truths contained In Bible narratives. Through her re search and study of the Bible she not ed that perfect trust and confidence in God’s laws were followed by per manent and fixed results and that blessing and healing were part and parcel of His infinite plan. Hence Mrs. Eddy discovered and proved the divine laws of life, truth and love. After this discovery she subjected it to proof and being convinced of the healing and redeeming ministrations of these spiritual laws she determined to give to the world the benefit of her observation and discovery. Ac cordingly she wrote and published 'Sci ence and Health With Key to the Scriptures' and designated it the Chris tian Science textbook. The reading and study of this book, in connec tion with the Bible, has brought health and healing to many and is indeed a key to God's inspired word— the Bible. “Regardless of conflicting reports, I make this positive and emphatic declaration of fact: Mary Baker Eddy is the discoverer and founder of Chris tian Science and has been so decreed by our courts. “It will early be discovered that Christian Science emphasizes the final destruction of sin and the healing of bodily infirmity. Some of our re ligious friends have offered the criti cism that Christian Scientists make too much of the healing element. At no time does the human mind part with cherished beliefs or relinquish traditional claims until proof, clear ADV EKT1HKM ENT. COSTS ONLY 50c OUT MY, HOW POSLAM HEALS! It is not surprising, therefore, that after material methods have failed and | Christian Hrienre treatment has re i stored health and happiness to the I individual very much should be llhought and made of the healing ele ment. In fact, all Christian Science ! practice is healing in character i whether it Is applied to bodily afflic tions or to some other forms of dis ! i Ol d. "Mrs. Eddy has discovered and ap plied the laws of Spirit. The false beliefs regarding these laws or the willful rejection of them in no way affect their intrinsic value and they remain ever available to all who will understand and apply them according to their Principle. Christian Science is applying the red letters 'Counter feit' to the false conclusions and the false beliefs masquerading as realities in the human mind. It Is unfolding to the receptive thought and bringing into human experience positive proof that 'There is no life, truth, intelli gence or substance in matter’ and that 'Spirit is the real and eternal.’ (Science and Health, page 488.) This reality is the basic fundamental state of being. The practice of Christian Science is destroying the unreal, counterfeit values of human beliefs and Is bringing into view the basic, scientific facts of spiritual truth. It is furnishing undeniable proof that ignorance and false belief have no part or place in God's creation. "In the consideration of Christian Science it is absolutely essential to understand the nature of good and evil and to be able to distinguish be tween that which is Intrinsically good and that which presents merely the appearance of good. Christian Science declares in no uncertain manner that God is the source of all good and that the human—the carnal—mind is the procuring cause of all evil. It pre sents logical, irrefutable proof that man lives by divine decree, and that the Scriptural text, ’In Him we live and move and have our heing’ de dares the real status of man and not merely an emotional theory. It de clares emphatically that evil is not a i person, place or thing; that it is not a cause or creator, and that there is no realm or dominion over which evil is the sovereign power. In fact, it denies that evil has any power ex cept such as it assumes In human belief and it then destroys this as sumed power by overcoming the hu man mind with the divine Mind. ■'Christian Science presents to you the conception of God as infinite mind, spirit, soul, principle, life, truth, love, It presents nothing about Him save that which is supported and sustained by Bible authority and which Is ra tional and comforting. When it is perceived that God is Infinite divin* mind it at once becomes apparent that like produces like, hence His creation must of necessity be mental and not material. God must be sought and found, if at all, through the avenue of divine mind and not in or through matter. It then be comes clear that the real man whom God pronounced good lives, moves ' and has his being in mind, and is a | spiritual, not a material being, and | because he is an idea in mind he can j and does express the qualities of that divine mind which created him. "There is a very erroneous and un ! Christian belief ignorantly entertained I by many concerning the attitude of Christian Scientists toward the expe riences called sickness and death. The opinion is often erroneously enter tained that they are unmindful of these distressing human conditions and that they offer no relief to those who unfortunately suffer from these beliefs. Nothing could be farther from the truth. They freely admit that these conditions call for the highest degree of human compassion and they are proving their usefulness and com petency by supplying humanitarian compassion in a most effectual Chris tian manner. "They are healing sickness, sorrow and dire distress in the most effectual way, in fact they are doing ft in the only way that holds out a ray of hope or promise for the final deliverance from these evils. Christian Scientists, of course, do not agree with those who adopt the theory that there is something wrong with matter and therefore something material must be administered to restore harmonious action. “A Christian Science treatment is a conscientious effort based upon a sincere desire to bring into human experience "the enduring, the good, and the true" so that by the renew ing of the mind it can be proved what is that "perfect will of God." In I other words the reformation of the I sinner and the healing of the sick is but proof that divine Principle. God, is present and available and is, as we have heretofore seen Immanuel or God with us. This happy and desir able mental condition is established through the medium of prayer. There is great lack of understanding among Christian people as to what consti tutes true prayer. This lack of ab solute knowledge is the procuring cause of much error and accounts for the erroneous belief that Christian Scientists do not pray. Such belief has no foundation In fact. 'I hey pray continually and understanding^ and the fruits of their prayers are rich blessings lo humanity. It must be remembered however, that in their prayers they do not supplicate God to conform His will to thelts or to change His Infinite design. Neither do they charge Him with human de linkuencies and as a matter of course they do not petition Him to remedy 1 or correct that which He has not 1 created. They do pray to Him from I the standpoint of sincere desire and •'absolute faith that all things are ! possible to Him.” and such prayer is answered by driving out of human 1 conseiousness the diseased, erroneous images of thought and letting in the light of God s man created in llis | image and likeness."
