Yesterday afternoon Saunders emerged from the committee room with a bruised and bleeding check and his collar partly torn off. His clothing was badly disarranged. The name of his assailant was kept secret by t lie committee. May 11.—Whether Memphis will retain headquarters of the Piggly Wiggly Stores. Inc., pos sihly with Clarence Saunders volun tarily retiring as president of the company, or whether the corpora tion's main office will lie moved to | some other city, Mr. Saunders retain ing control, is expected to he deter mined largely by a meeting between local banking interests and a corn mittee of the Memphis Chamber of Commerce today. The boy. while play Ing about the yard, stepped on a rusty nail, which passed entirely through tlie shoe and into the foot. Infection resulted, followed with lock jaw. May 11.—The city council let a contract for paving six blocks in the residential section. Troops Start 190-Mile Hike Fort Omaha .and Fort Crook Soldiers Due at Fort Leaven worth May 29. Two hundred and fifty soldier* from Companies K, F. U. and H. in full marching order, left Fort Omaha at 6 yesterday morning on their hike to Fort Leavenworth a distance of about 190 miles. They stopped for a brief rest at Ilanscom park at 8. The column was scheduled to ar rive at Fort Crook yesterday after noon at 1. Here it picked up a head quarters company and a band. The detachments is in command of MaJ. Casper Kucher. A reconnais sance party was sent in advance »o arrange for camp sites. The hikers are due in Fort Leavenworth May 29. Here they will engage in target prac tice and will also serve as demon stration troops for the citizens’ mili tary training camp there. They will return to Omaha in Sep tember. Scribner Farmer Is Found Dead in Yard of barm Home Special IHnpntrh to The Omit hit Bee. Fremont, Xeb.. May 11.—John Wah lera, 55, bachelor, was found dead in his farm yard near Scribner, by neighbors, who were alarmed over the fact that his mail had not been taken from the box in front of the house for two days. Doctors estimate that he died Mon day. He was lying face downward near the barn. There were no signs of violence or a .struggle. A large number of cattle and other stock were at the point of starvation. Whalers lived alone and rarely had visitors. Two brothers in Germany are i he sole heirs to his property. His farm was unencumbered and he seem i ed fairly prosperous. Duncan of Minneapolis, di visional director of prohibition, is in Omaha ronsulting with federal agents here, lie said enforcement of (lie law is stronger in Nebraska than in any other four states in his division. Few Coast Lambs Being Shipped California Stockmen Hard Hit by Drouth, Omaha Stockman Reports. Bert Roberts, traveling representa tive of the Omaha Union .Stockyards company, who has returned from a trip to the western cattle country and the Pacifiy coast, reports that very few more California Iambs will come east this spring. He says that prac tically all the lambs will be gone be fore the first of June. Sheepmen in California, according to Roberts, were hard hit by the drouth, and the demand of the coast country for meats is good. He does not believe that frozen carcasses shipped through the Panama canal will ever compete seriously for do mestically slaughtered animals in the eastern markets.
