| MARKET, FINANCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL NEWS OF THE DAY | Omaha Grain Omaha, April 26. Total receipts at Omaha were 77 cars against Itl cars last year. Total shipments were 209 cars against 99 cars a year ago. Cash wheat was in fair demand at unchanged to 1-2 cent higher. Corn was in good demand, prices generally 1 to 1 1-2 cent higher. Oats were 1-4 to 3-4 rent higher. Rye was quot ed 1-2c higher and barley unchanged. After an initial break at the open ing the Chicago futures market de veloped a strong undertone and an advancing tendency. Weather in the northwest and Canada continues wet and unfavorable for spring seeding mid this delay Is becoming more of a market factor. Reports from the winter wheat crop are not as reas suring as expected following the mhis. The tenor of these reports seem to indicate that more damage had already been done than antiei pated. There were quite large sales of wheat made to Greece and this was included among the bullish fac tors. WHEAT. Chicago, April 25.—Buying power In wheat became more aggressive to day and, while liberal profit taking sales featured tlie upturns, the market closed near the top and not far from the best levels of the year. The de- j lay in the seeding of spring wheat in the northwest led to much of the support. Wheat closed 3 461c higher, corn 8-46lc up. oats l-861-4c advanced, rye l-4®l-2c higher, and barley- fin- 1 ished steady. Houses with eastern connections I were active buyers of wheat right up to the /'losing bell. It was also re- j ported that a prominent local short had covered Ills lines. Outside inter-, est was not particularly improved, but the market received constant sup port, nevertheless. C orn Continue* I pward. Corn continued to move up under active commission house and local support. Cash < interests took considerable Mgy, while j shorts were also reported covering South-) western markets were particularly strong, while the basis here advanced % He. country offerings of corn w«tp still light. ! Oats advanced slowly with other grains.* There was a fairly active detuned for this grain, but the hard spots kept getting liberal, .selling on resting orders. .Specu lative interest is more or less inactive. Eastern interests bought May rye. which was lakcn to be against export sales. Provisions eased. Short covering w ex , less in evidence and welling credited t«» smaller packers sufficed to take »he edge* off the market Lard was 7H01ftc lower J and ribs were 12%* lower. P i Notea. What seemed to make quite an impres sion on the speculative mind weie the ca ble advices that stocks of wheat in Eu rope were down to a minimum Exporters were credited with predicting that the Cnited Kingdom will be back in the mar ket readily in a liberal way Europe has been buying hard winters. Manitoba*, du rum* and Plate wheat actlv* l> the past tw« days. Pessimistic crop news on condition* tn the northwest were resumed The week ly government report .-aid in regard to condition* In western Kansas: "Th>* wheal fields are generally as tfare as the dfcy they were sown. This is due to the extended drouth. The majority of advice* from our own northwest state that seeding will not be come general f°r some time, at least an other week, with 4he proviso that weather is favorable In Canada the soil is either too dry or too wet for favorable seeding, this being particularly true of Saskatchewan World’s available stock* of wheat con fined to decrease sharply for the past week dropping 4.74a.000 bushels. Th* total is now 181.642,000 bushels, compared with 162.089,000 bushel* last year. Ca bles had It that a more active cash busi ness prevails in the l nlt*d Kingdom, de spite the fact that offerings of Argentine and North American wheat remain libeial. CHICAGO MARKETS. April 25—The favorable earnings of the United States Steel corporation for the first quarter of this year directed speculative atten tion in Wall Street to the good busi ness being done by most industrial corporations with the result that a strong and active stock market was witnessed, with prices advancing from 1 to 2 points in the most active issues. Steels, oils and sugars were the leaders. Quite a number of special ties reached new high gorund, Fleisch mann company being the 'most prom inent.
