Chinese Envoy . % on Way to Tell U. S. About Shooting l)r. Sze Will Explain Circum stances Surrounding Mur der of American Citizen at Kalgan Gate. By Universal Service. Washington, April 8.—With a little Mack bag, Dr. Alfred 8ze, Chinese minister to the United. States, Is speeding across the Pacific ocean to tell Secretary oi; State Hughes the tacts about tho recent shooting of Charles Coltman, American citizen, at it the Kalgan gate of the Croat Wall of China. in the bag are his voluminous in structions, and in addition, data by which he will seek to enlighten the secretary on internal affairs in the land of the poppies. Coltman was killed last December w hile endeavoring to pass through the Kalgan gate with silver to buy mer chandise. Anticipating some diffi culty and wishing to be of aid, Ameri can Consul Sokobin accompanied him. Chinese sentries shot Coltman and narrowly missed hitting the American official. Nolo i\ rtually I ultima!uni. Secretary Huh gee sent off a stiff note of protest which was regarded as practically an ultimatum. The note demanded that the Chinese govern t inent formally apologize to the United States overnment, that the family of , Coltman he properly indemnglfied, t hat the military governor of the i hahar tribe ot»the Great Wall apol ogize to the consul, that the officials who were responsible for the death he removed from office and that they he tried under Chinese law, and if found guilty, he punished by it. Thee governments have been in power in China since Coltman was shot. China Is reported to be seeth es with the spirit of revolt, Us fae- | tions engaged in bush warfare and its ivilian population torn with conflict-] lug sentiments and emotions. Just ! who is in authority, it is hard to say, j hut Sze W'ill attempt to persuade Sec-1 retary Hughes that his faction still holds the reins at Pekin, In north ; China, and that It will make suitable I amends. However, there is some ques tion as to whether all the demands will I he met in full. Demand Chang Be Tried. Coltman lingered some lime before | lie died. Nn the meantime Jacob G. ; Hchurman, minister to China, filed ' strong protests with the Pekin gov- j eminent. An effort was made to ex ecute a few Chinse coolies to shield i he hlghcr-up in the case, Chang Hsi- j Yuan, who is alleged to have ordered j the men to fire. This arrangement j proved unsatisfactory and the Ameri can government demands that Chang be tried. A verdict of guiltv would cause him to be shot. The American note also carried a I strong plea that citizens of this coun ! try he given ample protection while pursuing their trades. For some quar- j ters the idea has gained prevalence \ that China has avoided a straight-i out declaration which would give j satisfaction, hut it is also claimed that travelers who will take risks in foreign countries, are liable to meet with emergencies. Man Mistaken for Robber Is Shot Watchman Fires on H. E. Wells in Tech High Con struction Office. H. E. Wells, 2109 1-2 Cuming street,! labor foreman at Technical llighj ■ hool, was shot and seriously wound-j r-d when ho mistaken for a burglar by Hteve Bouras, 1312 j Uotlglas street, night watchman at the | high school. Wella, in company with j Frank Elshirc, also employed at the. building, had gone to the place to get ( i bottle of whisky, It was said. Bouras and M. J. I.eachey, 2801 l^avenworth street, another watch man, heard the two men in the office of superintendent of construction. Be lieving they were burglars, the two j men ran up the stairs to the door of the office. The door was locked and i here was no light inside. •j As Bouras, who was In the lead, en tered the office Elshlre leaped upon j him, thinking It was someone attempt ing to break Into tho place. When Wells saw his friend and the watch j man struggling on the stairmay he took part In tho fight. Klshlre made ! his escape. Wells attempted to run away when he saw IOlshiro leave, but Bouras opened fire as be reached the corner j 0 ftho building. Wells was struck in ' tho left temple by tho first shot. The ■ ill was deflected by the skull and came out back of his left ear. An other* shot passed through his left thumb and the third shot went wild Bouras is being held for Investiga tion. Wells wag removed to tho Eord Bister hospital after lie had had his wounds dressed by Dr. Klnyoun, po lice surgeon, at tho station. Ho is expected to recover. _ _ __ BEE WANT AD RATES 1 Be per line earh day, I or t days. 3 2c per line each day, ft to 6 day*. 10c per line each day, 7 day* or longer.
