Dynamite Blast Rocks Nashville 300 Sticks Explode in Sewer —Dozens of Homes h Damaged. Nashville, Tenn., April t.—A supply dynamite for sewer excavation work in West Nashville, variously estimated at from 168 to 300 sticks, exploded from some undetermined cause today at Alabama and Forty sixth avenues, demaging dozens of homes and Injuring several persons. No fatalities were reported. Occupants of nearby homes for three blocks were knocked down by the force of the explosion or struck by flying debris and falling pictures. France Ready to Scrap Navy When Other Powers Do By Associated Press. Paris. April 6.—The president of the naval committee of the French senate, Gustave Kcrguezec, in a state ment to the Associntd Press yesterday, i advocated the summoning of a fur ther naval armament conference 1 which would have for its object the ! actual scrapping of the big navies j of the world. “I guarantee, in the name of the I French parliament*” he declared, j "that France will suppress its entire fleet if the other powers will do like wise." Indian Oil Leases W orth Millions Change Owners at Nod or Wavy of Hand Pawhuska, Okl., April 6.—Simple nods of heads or raising of hands pledged the oil industry yesterday to pay to Osage Indian tribe $8,029,100. Four sales netted more than $1,000, 000 each, the highest price being paid by Waite Phillips, $1,325,000, for a lease' on 160 acres. The Carter Oil company paid $1,025, 000 for another lease, the Gypsy Oil company bought a third for $1,195, 000, and the fourth went to the Phil lips Petroleum company, controlled by a brother of Waite Phillips, for $1,005,000, The 10'tracts listed to be leased In the Burbank field brought $7,577,000. Nine other tracts near the field sold Yor $49,600 and 129 leases located in the east side of the county went for a total of $402,600. The sale was the second largest of Osage oil leases. It exceeded in re ceipts the last sale, in January, by approximately $2,000,000, but fell nearly the same amount below the total of a sale held in June last year. At the June sale the record price of $1,600,000, or $10,000 an acre, was paid for a lease. Secretary of the Interior Hubert Work and Charles H. Burke, commis sioner of Indian affairs, attended the opening and reappeared for the tene* half.hour in which the richest tracts were sold. Newcomb of Kearney, i Neb., mimed by the federal farm loan ' board to succeed the late Chris M. ] Gruenther as secretary of the Federal Land Bunk cf Omaha, is known to I the officers of the bank, with which I he lias been Identified as appraiser. He was the first appraiser appoint ed by the farm loan board of Wash ington for the Federal Land Bank of Omaha, serving three years in that capacity. During the last three years he has served as reviewing ap praiser for the Omaha, Wichita, Louisville, St. Louis and St. Paul Federal Land bunk districts. Mr. Newcomb was in the land busi ness at Clay Center at the time of ills first appointment by the farm loan board. He is expected here next week to begin his work. D. P. lfcgun, president of the Fed eral Land bank, said of Mr. New comb: “He is one of the best Judges of farm lands I know. He is a fine executive and capable In every way of filling the position. We think that the selection made by the farm loan board was the best that could be made." ft E. D. Morcom, treasurer of the land bank, stated that Mr. Newcomb is equipped tn every way for the posi tion of secretary. "Mr. Newcomb has a strong charac ter and is abreast of land bank af fairs. Stockholm, April 6,—-The govern ment headed by lljalmar Branting, premier and foreign minister, wti de feated in the upper chamber of par liament tonight by a vote of 76 against 60. The vote was on a proposal by tho government to distribute doles among the unemployed. The formal resignation of the cabinet will be tendered Friday, but Crown Prince Gustave, who Is acting as regent, will J suggest that M. Branting handle the i affairs of state until the kin*, who at present is in Nice, returns home. The debate over the doles question was unusually heated and- the vote rejecting the government’s proposal is considered by many persons aa the first sign of a general reaction against tha socialists and an alliance of the other parties against them.
