_MARKET, FINANCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL NEWS OF THE DAY Omaha Grain Omaha, April 4. Total receipts at Omaha were 102 oara, against 149 cars last year. Total shipments were 175 ears, as cornparctl with 105 cars a year ago. Scant offerings of wheat on the Omaha market were in fair demand at unchanged prices. There was a good demand for corn at l-2c higher to 1 2c lower. Oats were unchanged to l-4c lower. Rye was quoted unchanged and barley unchanged. Strong wheat market at Liverpool and Buenos Aires were responsible for a higher range of values in the Chi • ago futures market at the start to day. Considerable profit-taking was in evidence on the advance and high est prices were not maintained. There were numerous reports of wet snow from Colorado, western Ne braska and northwestern Kansas, but no moisture was claimed for the dry district of western Kansas and Okla homa. The market was well sup ported by commission houses on the setback and prices during the latter part of the session were steady and it the close slightly higher than yes terday. WHEAT. Chicago, April 4.—Buying power in wheat was hesitant and confined mainly to the weak spots. Prices moved higher under the impetus of short covering early, but the steady selling through commission houses and by local operators carried the market to an irregular finish. Wheat closed l-4c lower to l-8c highei: corn was 1-2 to 3-4c higher: oats were unchanged to ]-4q off; rye ruled 1-8 to l-4c higher. May wheat acted reactionary after the initial spurt, while the new buy ing coming into the market was cen tered in the July. The result was a narrowing of the spread between these two months to 3c. Outside markets were little excited and the sharp setback at Argentina proved disconcerting to the bulls. Corn Mores Higher. Corn moved up m.lly. Buying by local bulls o-as active while a prominent house with country connection* was aggressive on the buying side also, Southwest mar kets noted a broadening demand for the caah article. Traj^; ,n oat* whs fairly active. May acted dr.iggy throughout under liquidat ing R<t 1 os, and effect the scattered com mission house demand for the deferred months. Seaboard houses were fair buyers of rye TuejuJaj-, while lor alp bought ryo and sold wheat at 38c difference. Provision* worked higher, i,anl clos'd £%c®7%c higher and rib* were 7%c : higher. I*it Note*. It was easily portrajed in today's mar ket that the changing crop new* from out of the various section* of the winter wheat, belt is the governing factor in the price swing at the moment. While the ex treme western section of Kansan has had no apparent relief from drouth. Nebraska ai;d scattered part of Kansas received generous rain which later turned into sr.ow. acording to private advice*?. All in all. the crop news was regarded ns more fa vov&ble. Messages from the seaboard were In clined to reflect the suggestion that for- , elgn buyers are holding firmer Ideas about the market, n cause being the doubtful outlook of the growing * Inter wheat crop. Movement of wheat to primary mark els keep* up fairly well, although country of ferings of the old crop are said to be light Demand for the tash article in ill was term d fair at generally unchanged ; premiums. Foreign new* is cheerful. Fables from the United Stale# atat*- that the reduction in world shipment* revived general demand there, while offerings of , Manitoba and Platte wheat? are on a firm basis. The world's available supply I of wheat for the week showed a decrease of 2,962.000 bushels, and now rggregaten 189.383.000 bushels, compared with 175, 093.000 bushel** a year ago Rurther report of the presence of green bugs in scattered sections of Oklahoma were received, but no complaints of dam age ate yet forthcoming CHIC AGO MARKETS. By l niTtr«*4 Venice. New York. April 4.—Fear that the local federal reserve directors would decide to increase the rediscount rate at their meeting scheduled for late in the afternoon instilled a dominating element of uneasiness into stock deal ings and caused a further slight loss for the session. Intermittent rallies, while making up some of the lost ground, failed to attract sufficient out side buying to offset the continued pressure applied by a leading pro fessional clique known to be heavily short of stocks. As the reserve directors decided to maintain the existing 4xi per cent rate, brokers went home with the opinion that this short interest may have difficulty in maintaining their position at least teirorarily. A re duction in the call rate to 4 per cent as compared with the 5 per cent charged throughout most of the day failed to check the offerings and the close was highly irregular. French Franc* Weak. Ruther sensational weakness in French francs everted a destructive Influence on other continental European exchange*. Stealing was also affected for awhile, but rallied before the close. Market analysis are coming around to the opinion that some outstanding con structive happening is needed before auf ficient public participation van be reat tracted to warrant the resumption of the upward trend. Mack Truck wus the sole motor share of ooneenuence to add materially to its previous advance Maxwell share* closed fractionally higher under an exceptionally large turnover, a good part of buying cot” n»r from those who have been interested for some time. It was accompanied by reports of record earnings The move In Mack* Truck was also due mainly to poo! operation.*. Oils in (.ood Fashion. The bonds which have been called for retirement April 15 arc tho outstanding from an issue of $10,000,* 000 due in 1921 and issued April 15. 1921. At the time they were issued the company was not in a critical posi tion. but no one could foresee the re markable recovery from the general business slump which the automobile industry was to make nor that the Packard company shortly was to emerge into a period of the biggest business in its history. A complete reorganization of every department of the company started early in 1920 in preparation for what seemed likely to develop into a busi ness depression of serious proportions. Economic.s adopted in this reorgan isation work have been continued, although the depression did not ex tend over the period as long as an ticipated and the company now is do ing the biggest volume of business in i’s history with attendant satisfac tory profits despite greatly reduced prices on its products. With the retirement of its bonds, the Packard company will have out standing after April 15 preferred stock of $14,676,200 par value and $23,* 770,200 par value common stock, in* eluding the 100 per cent common stock dividend recently paid. Net earnings of the company will be con siderably' increased through the re moval of the fixed interest charge on the bonds. Foreign LKnangf. .Ve-v York.
