Anti-La Follette Fight Seen in Senate Move Naming of Lenroot as Assis tant Leader Forecast of Ad ministration Attitude in Next Election. Ry GEORGE F. AI THIKR. WnxIiinBto" < 'orrmpomlrnt The Onialiu Me*. ■Washington, l^eb. 10.—(Special.)— Administration approval is assumed to have been given to the change in the senate leadership announced last Saturday by which Senator Wads worth of New York and Senator Lcn lopt of Wisconsin become assistant leaders under the generalship of Sen ator Lodge. Although a young man, and one of the ablest men in the senate, AVadsworth is regarded as a conservative. He is a regular republi can—not hidebound—but committed to the ideas of party regularity and of accepted republican doctrines. Lenroot, another one of the young er senate leaders, is a progressive in spots, but far removed from the de gree of progressivism represented by Ills eulleague, Senator La Follette. The selection of Lenroot for senate leadership is a direct challenge to the La Follette group. The feud on be tween Lenroot and La Follette is one which admits of no quarter and Len root is booked for slaughter in AA'is consin at a future date, provided the La Follette forces can bring it about. Indicates Program. Assuming administration approval of the selection of leaders, it follows that the administration,, already lay ing plans for the next national battle, has indicated something of its pro gram. By associating Ijenroot and A¥adsworth in the leadership of the senate, it proposes to attempt the con tinned welding of the conservative and progressive elements of the party, without being so conservative as to lean backward on one side and not so progressive as to exceed the speed limit on the other. Administration leaders regard I.a Follctte as a contender for the presi dential nomination in 1924, and whether the president is a candidate or not, neither he nor his friends will accept I -a Follcttc. They regard him as committed to ideas they cannot ap prove relative to government owner ship, changes in the law governing supreme court decisions and other questions. Against la Kollette. The selection of I-enroot as a sub leader means the administration will throw' its influence to I-enroot against Lia Kollette within Wisconsin and throughout the farming section of tho middlewest. > Senator I .enroot has been assigned the task of preparing the rural credPs bill wilh which the administration proposes to go before the voters of the farming section, a measure that is not approved by the I-a Kollette group. '• r It is not believed the selection of subleaders will be conducive to har mony in the next session of the sen ate, but apparently the administra tion Is prepared to accept the chal lenge at the outset and take Its chances accordingly. This decision probably has been encouraged bv the fact it iR realized there is little chance “Off to War” A splendid picture of I". S. S. Maryland as It passed out of Brooklyn navy yard and under Manhattan bridge. New York, on its way to fleet maneuvers in southern waters. of conciliating I-a Follette under any ’circumstances. ' The elimination of Senator Watson of Indiana from the leadership is in terpreted as indicating the adminis tration Js not disposed Jo take any hand in the Indiana situation, nor is it willing to have Watson, an ac knowledged conservative of the.oll school, represent the administration in the fights that arc sure to occur in the senate during the next session. Incidentally, the senate action is regarded as foreclosing the chance that President Harding will not he a candidate for renomination. The Alaskan expedition which he proposes to make this summer will take him through the country over two routes, one of wjiich will probably take him through Michigan and the northern Mississippi valley states, and the other the southern route, through Omaha and Des Moines, with a pos sible diversion to St. I.ouis and Kansas City. The president may be relied upon to make a number ^jf speeches on this trip, a virtual going to the country. Kan., Feb. 10.—The Ku 1 Kltix Klan makes sweeping denial of ith* statements and charges contained jin the petition recently filed by the state to oust' the organization from Kansas, in an answer filed with the supreme court here yesterday. According to the petition, the klan is purely a social, secret and benevo lent organization. It opposes mob activities or violence, intimidation or threats, believes in enforcement of law by constituted authorities and In the highest allegiance to the govern ment of the United States; and, fur thermore, it has no members, agents or employes j„ Kansas. McCrab and Noebel Mc Call—are or ever were members of the klan. The klan, first of all, denies that the supreme court of Kansas has ju risdiction to act in the case because tlie klan Is a Georgia corporation and maintains no offjees or possesses no property in Kansas. Tlie answer also denies that the klan or any of its members ever has been guilty of law violation as an or ganization. The charter of tlie organization of a Georgia corporation is attached to the answer ns "exhibit A,” and at gr<j§t length the principles of the or der are set forth, revealing the klan "teaches loyalty to tlie United States," the Declaration of Independence is Its political creed, that it holds ns In valuable the doctrine of religious freedom and freedom of speech and of the press; that no other govern ment, potnte or power can share in its allegiance, and magnifies (he Bible as the basis of our constitution and foundation of our government, the source of our laws; the sheet anchor of our liberty, the most practical guide of conduct and tin* source of all true wisdom."
