Constables Are Ordered to Pav ' ■ By Carning $300 Monthly Serving Summons Attaches Make More Than Judges, Is Claim. Five constables attached to the mu mnpal court are perturbed over an order which requires them to pay in to the court fund all 25-cont fees col lected for serving copies of summons to defendants and which money they heretofore have kept. It lias been the custom of the clerk of the court to issue all summons in duplicate on a typewriter, handling original and duplicate to the constable who returns the original to the court with his notation whether service has been obtained. Ho bands the dupli cate to the defendant. The constable is allowed 50 cents for making the re turn to the court and also is allowed 3 5 cents i>er mile traveled, and up to the first of this moYith ho lias been allowed 25 cents for eiich duplicate served on defendants. The theory is that the constable shall make out the duplicate himself. Karn More Than Judges. •'Constables have been earning from $250 to $300 per month," said Preaid- ' ing Judge George Holmes. "They have been making more than the ,'iidges who are paid only J2.500 a 'ear. Me are going to have a chart here to show the distances from the city hall so that the constables will charge the proper mileage. T lun of tlie opinion that the constahles will comply with the new order by paying in the 25-ccnt fees collected for serv ing copies of summons." The constables collect their fees from the attorneys In most cases and from plaintiffs in cases where there are no attorneys. Claim Fees b.v Law. ‘ The law gives us the 25-cent fee charged for serving copies on defend ants," said one of the constables. "Me will make our own copies of s ummons hereafter. M e have to do the work and tt is not fair to pay somebody else 25 cents for slipping in a carbon sheet when making out the original summons.” The municipal court constables are F. W. McGinnis, George Seay, Mil liani Fleming. Pat Melch and Henry Morrison. The new bailiff is M. F. Singleton. Water From Lourdes Shrine to Be Used at I\o\ena Here llev. A. T.
