SMLy^NTM: On the Screen Today. Sun—"Dr. tack." Rialto—"Tess of the Storm Coun try.” Strand—“The Dangerous Age.” Empress—"The Forgotten Law.” World—"If I Were Queen.” Moon—"The Secret of the Storm Country.” Lewis Stone does a finished piece of acting in "The Dangerous Age,” When he feels young and sprightly lie looks that way. and at the end of the picture, when he has learned bit terly enough that he is no stripling, he looks older by 10 years. The whole play is well cast. Cleo Madison, as the wife who has put romance out of her life with her baby's first shoe, but who learns, also bitterly, that she has made a mistake, is excellent in her part. The play is unusually Interesting, for It undertakes to prove that there is more romance in marriage than in , courtship, and more drama, too. It takes for its hero and heroine the middle-aged couple, and the young sters’ love affair is a mere back ground. When a large film producer asked recently what the public wanted to see on the screen, many letters were received saying "Show us how to solve our married problems, not how to get divorces." "The Danger ous Age" offers one solution, and is cleverly told without moralizing. The picture has a ring of reality through out, and moves swiftly and smoothly. The "Storm Country," whatever that is, Is getting plenty of attention this week. At the Rialto Mary Pick ford’s new production of "Tess of the Storm Country,” and at the Moon Norma Talmadge in "The Secret of the Storm Country,” were viewed by breathless and tearful and laughing audiences yesterday. The plots are very much alike. In each of these stormy melodramas there is the inevitable babe born without benefit of clergy, but at the Rialto Mary Plckford takes the blame *f being the child's mother to protect the sister of her sweetheart, while at the Moon Toss, Norma Talmadge’ is really the infant’s mother. Both dramas find apparently much of their popularity in deplcyng such sterling truths as that all poor squat ters or fishermen are good; that well to-do folks, with rare exceptions, are tricky, dishonorable and mean; that all church people are hypocrites, and that college-bred, meticulously dressed young men invariably pass by the pretty girls of their own set and fall in love with the odoriferous fish girls, who can’t read and who say "air,” in stead of "am,” or "is.” But while we may sit and philosophize at the incongruities and idiocies of these dramas, the fact remains that they are beloved by the great mass of j the people. Miss Plckford's Tess at the Rialto is particularly well done. Mary has lost none of her cleverness. She is a wild young thing, doing whai she thinks, according to her lights. Nor ma Talmadge's Tess at the Moon is not quite so wild, but is also war ranted to win the popular approval. 1 The Plckford production is the more pretentious of the two. We may be overly squeamish, but confess we don't like the frequent questions rais ed in the plot, picture and titles as to who Is "the father of the child.” Probably we are overly touchy and perhaps this is the very thing that brings in the big audiences. "Dr. Jack” Is a high spot in com- ; edy work on the screen. Harold ■ Lloyd deserves unlimited credit, for he wrote It as well as acting It, and it Is full of original touches. T^he poker game, when Lloyd slips every' player at the table four aces and lets Them fight It out, is especially well worked out, and Lloyd manages to think up something new in the way of "pursuit scenes," when he dis guises himself as an escaped lunatic and Cavorts about the house, ever and anon appearing in his own clothes to join the search for himself. If the story Is improbable, who cares.' Cer tainly not the audience, judging from the laughter which was forthcoming. This has more plot than most come dies and Harold Lloyd at his best, as in this one, cannot be surpassed In the screen world. Not of the latest vintage, to be sure, but of the type which carries its age well, is "If I Were Queen” at the World. That kind of a romantic melodrama Is just as good one year as the next, nnd this production star ring Ethel Clayton, has been judi ciously cut Into an hour of good rapid moving entertainment. Brass but tons and uniforms, shiny cavalry boots ftnd princely palaces all lend color and help out the plot, which deals with an American girl who is mistaken for a princess, and as such wins the undying love of the young king of Freblloff. Warner Baxter as the lover. Is highly attractive, and Ethel Clayton is as good looking as ever. There seems to be a flock of these rather elderly or middle aged pictures in Omaha this week. "The Forgotten l>aw," at the Empress, is no fledgling, having been made in the days when Milton Sills, the hero, was one of Metro's leading men. Still it does no condemn a picture, merely because It is not hot from the sUtdtos. and The Forgotten I-aw,” a domestic quad rangle. is all right in its way. and points an excellent moral, namely that every state should check off its old wornout statutes. The chubby little golden-haired child saying he prayers at her uncles knee, the uncle who has wrested her from her doting mother, is a pathetic hut not a very new one. And there is the fatal packet of letters pro duced by the demi-mondaine at tne crucial moment, and the deathbed con fession of the #oman who really fired the shot, also at the crucial moment. Put there is certainly human Interest. E. T. B. Woman Held in Slaying of Husband Collapses Oskaloosa, la., Jan. 7.—Mrs. Paul J„ Eberle of Des Moines, held in con nection with the slaying of her hus band in an automobile here Tuesday ' afternoon, is in a state of nervous col lapse, and attending physicians say that her condition Is serious. Mrs. Eberle has been in a local hospital since the shooting occurred. She says she shot her husband in self-defense. Bee "Want Ads produce results i I , Chance for U. S. Aid in Europe Is Fading Washington, Jan. 7.—(By A. r.)— The possibility of any development abroad to change the policy of France and bring American aid into the repa rations breach in Europe appeared to be fading hour by hour. There is reason to believe that the Washingt n government not only sees no further opportunity at this time to suggest a way to Franco-Brilish reconciliation, but lacks also any in timation that its good offices will be sought from across the Atlantic, at least In advance of actual test of the f'rench theories on reparations. Once the French plan has been tried and its results demonstrated, the sit uation with respect to American aid may change. But there Is no doubt that American official opinion is gravely concerned, lest political chaos and a complete economic breakdown come In Germany before that point has been reached. ■ 1 ~ 1 .. — - ■-- - BRINGING UP FATHER——— .R»,u,T’i...
