The entries today passed the 1,800 mark, fully 25 per cent greater than any previous exhibition held by the Nebraska society. The first course of instruction in poultry raising was given this morning. The sessions will be held every morning through out the rest of the week, with experts I from the state college and other uni versities in charge. Chanticleer is in his glory and the vicinity of the audilorium resounds throughout the day and night with each rooster trying to outdo his neighbor in the art of crowing. High Court Confirms Omahan’s Life Term Lincoln. Jan. 2.—(Special.— T)he supreme court today handed down an opinion affirming the life sentence give Charles Markiewicz of Omaha convicted of murder in the district court of Douglas county. The court says it would like to reduce tiio pen ulty but under the law and evidence cannot do so. Markiewicz killed an Omaha barber whose shop he had entered to pur chase a drink of whlskv. Do gave the barber a $20 bill an I w*s in fused change in a josh. Markiewicz took it seriously, however, and shot the proprietor. The high court affirmed the con viction of William Morris, McPher son county rancher, who was accused of murdering his wife. Morris re ported to neighbors that his wife had become entangled in a rope tied to a horse which she was riding and was dragged to her death. Bank Kohlier Musi Serve 20-Year Prison Sentence Lincoln, Jan. 2.—(Special.)—Riley] Smith, convicted in Saunders county of robbing tho State Dank of Ithaca and sentenced to 20 years In the peni tentiary, must serve his term the supremo court ruled hero today in ! denying the appeal of tho former wealthy Omaha man. Tho grounds upon which Smith sought reversal of the sentence were mostly technical, among tho chief ulle potions of error was the action of the trial court in permitting outside coun sel to assist In the prosecution. ThiB, tho court said, did not constitute] prejudicial error. In another Douglas county case, tho supreme court refused to approve tho appeal of Stanley Norracel, a minor, who sued the Cudahy Packing company for injuries. Norracel came under the provisions of the compen sation act and it was shown that lie hud failed to affirmatively reject the provisions of compensation provided by tho act. The supreme court says that until this is done, no suit for damages can be brought. County Boartl Presents Bill for Feeding City Prisoners County commissioners advised city council yesterday that the city of Omaha owes the county of Douglas $1-15,977, mostly for feeding prison ers. The city officials contend there is an unsettled balance duo from county to city. Tha controversy is of long standing. Mrs. M. E. McIntyre Dies. Body of Mrs. Mary K.
