former Fremont •Police Officers * Sued for $5,000 Woman Charges Invasion of Home and Attack by Policeman While Two Others Watched Scene. Fremont, Neb., Dec. 29.—(Special.) —Chief of Police Edward Brenner and former Policemen Thomas Riley and Charles Crampton were made de fendants in a damage suit for $5,000 by Mrs. Nellie Vitamvas. Khe charged that the officials violated their duties of office, when they entered the Vitamas home on the night of De e-ember 24 and assaulted, defined and maliciously prosecuted her. Crampton and Riley reslgneei when Mayor Green announced that they . were*"involved in an unfortunate in | - ident.” Mrs. Vitamvas claims the officers forced an entrance into the family home without the proper authority and when requested to leave, attack ed Mrs. Vitamvas and her husband, Anton. Officer Riley struck Mrs. Vitamvas about the face and body, wrenched her arms and her shoulders and otherwise brutally mistreated her, the petition states. RUey used vile and indecent lan guage in addressing tlpmi. It is claimed, and Chief Brenner and Crampton failed to perform their duty by In terfering. The pettition also names Fidelity Deposit company with whom Chief Brenner is under bond. Chief Brenner stated that Officers Riley and Crampton were not on duty at the time of the alleged at tack. Certain Inmates of the house were under suspicion, Brenner stated, and the Vitamvas homo had been under surveillance. Chief Brenner claims that he was called to the Vitamvas home, where be found the officers and promised to make an investigation. Mayor Green was also called, the petition states, and he also promised an inquiry. i Senator-Elect Visits Lincoln R. B. Howell Plans lo Intro duce Several Bills in Legis lature Early in Session. Lincoln, Pee. 29.—(Special.)—R. B. Howell, United States senator-elect, appeared In Lincoln today and an nounced he would have hills ready for introduction in the legislature early in the Session. I “Will there be a muny light bill?" he was asked. “I don't care to say at this time,” he replied. “However, all bills I am interested in will be Introduced ea rly.” Mr. Howell denied hih appearance 4 the state cn^ltol had nnything to with contemplated fights in tho legislature and asserted that during his visit he had talked with only oVie member of the incoming legislature. Solons Jn hotel lobbies expressed the opinion that without doubt Mr. Howell would introduce his muny light bill, known as House Roll No. 1. two years ago. Whether it would be em bodied in a new water power bill, which would be linked with a water power development plan, which he may attempt to force through the national congress, was a suhjeet of speculation. . Howell has had an Omaha muny light hill before the legislature three times. “Once it was a compromise,” he •aid, “another time it was passed and vetoed by Governor Morehead, and the last time It was defeated in the lower house." Forme* Kearney Man Held for Looting Bank Lincoln, Dec. 29. — (Special.) — A warrant for the arrest of Herbert S Morse, president of the American State bank at Kearney, who has been missing for more than a year, was Issued by Assistant Attorney General C. L. Dort. Embezzlements, issuance of notes on false securities anf no-fund drafts totaling $12,600 are charged against him In 16 different counts in the in formation. Morse has been located In Oakland. . and O. D. Hedge, deputy state sheriff, on his way to bring him back to Nebraska. George W. Ayers Assistant to Lincoln. Dec. 29. — (Special.) — George W. Ayers, who at various times served as assistant attorney general under republicans and demo crats for 11 years, will again be assistant attorney general under O. S. Spillman, attorney general-elect, according to announcement made by Spillman. Ayers has been in private practice in Lincoln. Former Soldiers' Home Commander Dies, Aged 76 Grand Island, Neb., Dec. 29.—John F. Walsh, retired cotnmandant of the soldiers’ home, died here at the age of 76. He enlisted for civil war ser vice in Ohio. He came west after the war and located at Brownsville, from there going to Humboldt. He served one term as postmaster at Humboldt ind also was elected mayor. Ho was appointed commandant of the soldiers’ home here in 1915, resigning in 1919, and retiring from active work. Be sides his widow, four sons and one daughter survive him. County Law Maker Plans Fight on Beavers Lincoln, Dec. 29.—(Special.)—The Pet bill of Representative C. S. Reese of Cherry county, already nestling In his pocket ready for the house hop* per, provides for a repeal of the pres ent law protecting beavers from hunt ers.
