Corn trridera who havo been bullish said at the close that there had been break enough and that with the country net selling corn on the break and many weak holders hold out, they regard pur chases on breaka with favor and eapee.ial ly as western demand was larger. New Vork, Nov, 27. Kven pecula- tlve Willi street divided It nttuntion between the to k market, which hud another day of weakncMM, and the sterling exchange rate, which ad van c.-d In a Noiuewhat i-ctaciilir way. At I4.r2 1-4, tho twt Ilgure of the day, sterling ld a full cent above the year' previous high mark, which via reached June 6. Today' rate lad not been matched on any day since July 2, 1919, Just before the extremely violent decline began which brought sterling ' below 14.25 before that month was over. The rapidity of the present recov ery, which amounted to 2 l-4c for the day, Is nltogs-thcr easy to explain. It appears either that the continent Ih buying sterling to meet th com mitments In Its .trade with Knftland (even Ht 1'ari the pound sterling has advanced nearly I 12 francs since Thursday), or else that Ij)ndon Is tirawlng 011 Its continental balances for remittance to New York, tut we have not yet seen the last of the sea son's extraordinary fortvlKn exchange urn rket. Change Irregular. Change! for the day In the stock mar ket were Irregular enough to repeat the confusing picture that became familiar last week. Oenerally, the drift or prices waa downward and there were numerous net loss, of point or more. Hut there were also a few net advance running to 1 and 2 points and, ua a whole, the mar ket Indicated nothing hut the collision of piofessior.al speculator. Most of the railway share recovered all or the greater part of their earlier losses and this occurred In spite of a scries of earnings statements for October, which were undoubtedly disappointing. Prac tically nil the reporting road show large Increase In gross receipts, as compared with year ago. With auch line as the New York Cenlrol, At.-hlson and IIIUiol Central, the month Increase exceeds II,- 000,000, tho pereentuiro Increase ranging from 6 to 14 per cent. Hut of till great guln (which had been foreshadowed In the loading returns.) ao much had been nbsorb'-d In larger running expense that, with few exceptions the net result Is about tho aume aa October, 1921, or even small er There appear to be aeveral explana tions. One is that last year's October net earnings were particularly largo. For all the roads, that month's gross revenue had fallen 10 44 per cent from tho year before, but a sweeping reduction of 24 per cent n working expenses largely dun to a 20 per cent cut In outlay for roadbed and equipment enubied the companies to earn i per cent on property valuation; that percentage haa never been matched under the present transportation la,w, except by the b nl last March. Mall Klreet Topics. fteaboard Air Line bonds snffefed a sharp drop today, although officials of the road slated that they knew of no new dveloments whb-h could account for tho movement. It waa said In transportation quarter that other east ern roads would adopt a similar policy because of Improved traffic conditions. Conflicting reports are heard 111 the financial district regarding the next divi dend on tsreat Northern preferred. In some quarters the prediction la made that the stock Will be placed on a r". annual basis, which would be the same as North ern Pacific Is paying now. At. the same time, however one will be told elsewhere that tho dividend will remain on a 7 per cent basis when the directors meet for action next mouth.
