Hopkins Against
Light Rate Roost
tj
Coinuiii-hioiier to Offer Sul
etitute Onlinance on Street
Lighting Contract.
John Hopkins, city commissioner, to
whom the city council referred the
Nebraska Power company's proposed
street lighting contract ordinance.
.Saturdny morning slated hn will not
agree to any Increase of existing
rates.
The city council la looking to Mr.
Hopkins to submit his recommenda
tions. The commissioner explained
that he and the city electrician are
working on the matter and that with
in a few weeka they will have a re
port ready for city council. A sub
stitute ordinance will be offered by
Commissioner Hopkins.
Referring to method No. 1 of street
lamps, Mr. Hopkins said:
"I am opposed to any Increase of
the present rate of $31 per year per
lamp. We may recommend a decrease
of this rate, which has been applied
for the last 10 years."
Method No. 1 refers to the common
type of 400-candle power lamp sus
pended by cables or on mast arms.
There are approximately 3,300 of
these lamps In operation in Omaha
out of a total of nearly 6,500 electric
lamps.
The company is asking for an in
crease from $31 to $38 per year on
method No. 1 lamps and also In
creases on all other methods '
Commissioner Hopkins added that
his department will recommend the
replacement of all tw in unit lamps by
single units, meaning that one lamp
to a pole Is sulflcient. The present
twin-unit lamp rate Is $6S per year
and the company, In jts proposed con
tract rate ordinance, asks for a rate
of $80 per year. On the 400-candlo
power single unit ornamental lamp,
the present rate Is $36 and the com
pany is asking $50.
City commissioners are obtaining
data on street lighting from other
Cities.
"We wnt to do what Is right for
the taxpayers and also for the com
pany," said Commissioner Koutsky.
Commissioner I. B. Butler said the
company's proposed contract ordi
nance is an Insult to the intelligence
of the rlty council.
