flennan star, In a close match, 500 to
412. TJie result assured Iloppt, who
lias but one more match to play, of
at least a tie, In the tournament,
Jloppo employed a. variety of
strokes to hang up a run of 117 and
move Into a commanding lead over
the Herman, by a score of 33H to ir3.
The former title-holder brought the
balls together at the stnrt with three
open-table shots and then nursed the
ivories until he reached 61. Faulty
execution of a masse shot necessi
tated a shift to cushion caroms, but
he was successful.
Hoppe gained his victory In a match
filled with a strange medley of poor
and uncertain cueing', lloppc bad an
average of 2216 32, with high runs
of 117, 82 and 10. On two occasions,
when Juggling bis cue for the shot be
had to slip away from the table to
steady himself before continuing,
Ilagenlacher made two desperate
efforts to win, and but for wrong se-,
lection of shots might have done so.
Ills average whs 22 and his runs 16,
gg and 72. It marked the German's
final appearance In the tournament,
in which he has not won a game In
