Letters inquiring as to the safety of
a trip south arn beginning to come
in. Whllo thn winter vacation season Is
suinn distance In th futuifl, we are
right In the midst of tho winter plan
ning season.
Dengue is a dlsenso which apparent
ly has Its natural hiniie in Central
America. It Is occaslonslly brought to
the United Ktates by shipping, but un
til now ha never secured very much
of a foothold. It Is rarely fatal, If
ever. It Is )tiltn possible that the few
people who have been reported as dy
ing from dengue, died from some oth
er disease und either did not have
dengiiD or dengue was added to some
other malady, tlss latter being the
a use of death.
It Is generally agreed now that It Is
a mosquito borne disease. There I
not tho same degree of agreement
to tin mosquito, which is responsible,
but it Is reasonably certain that the
oflilidir (or olH-ndnlsl Is closely re
lated to the yellow fever mosqultoc.
The Louisiana bulletin say "Th in
sert, breeds by preference In rdns, bot
tles, Jars, tubs and cisterns In back
yards, and is often to be found In the
water pitcher of the sleeping room.
Itestroy mosquitoes, by destroying
breeding places und by screening cis
terns. Special attention hould be
given artificial ronlalners, such as cis
terns, water barrels, tin cans, Dottle,
urns, vases and sagging gutters."
The methods whlrh conquered yel
low fever should be used against
dengue.
The mosquito is upt to be found
breeding inside, the house. She Is
averse to leaving the house, and rare-
I ly travels long distance. All that I
known about tho dixc.-ue Indicate that
it will not endanger winter visitors.
The mosquito breeding season will
l.o over before the winter tourist sea
son begins, liven though the days be
warm enough for mosquitoes, the
nights are too cool for them to propa
gate, or for human diseases to mature
in them. 'l think it will he reaHonahly
safe to go as far as the lower end
of the Florida s-nlnsula.
If mosquito breeding is found to
continue there, screens are protective
enough, especially when the mosquito
is at a great disadvantage.
1 have never known of dengue per
sisting In midwinter anywhere In the

Prayer Each Day
An thou hat hllvn, bo b It dona unto
tlioa. Matt. 8:1.1.
Our Father In Heaven, as children
come to fln earthly parent, so we, Thy
children, come to Thee. We arknowl-
edgo Thy goodness In keeping us In
safety during the night, and In tho
mercies renewed to us with the re
turn of the day. Whllw wehave been
locked In (dumber, Thou hast not
suffered any harm to befall lis. VV
have lain us down In pears and slepi
because Thou hast sustained us, and
the morning of a new day finds us
with renewed vigor for its labor and
toil.
As the day brings to us fresh
obligations, fit us for their discharge.
As new temptations make their appeal
to us, strengthen us for their resist
ance. In new battle we may have to
fight, leal us to victory. Fortify ui
against the evil w may have to meet,
and mako us responsive to every up
lifting and helpful influence. May the
evil teiulencie In our nature con
stantly grow less insistent. May tho
spirit of love to Thee and to all
become the fixed characteristic of
our lives.
Accept our gratitude for daily re
newed mercies. Give us pardon for
fdl our sins. Keep us as a family
from harm nnd evil today, and when
our days on earth are past, bring us
to' the Heavenly home. We ask It in
Christ's name. Amen.
