in l' strnto'l, two under par and
our hetler than the competitive score
of 7U net hv Jce Guilford, national
champion, lat Monday. It wa the
fifth rourne record broken by Sweet
sir thi year, lie wa only little In

laying ordinary Rolf out in the

"Mechanical" Golfer.
To many who taw "Chick" F.van
play today the perfection of hit
atrokrs recalled the mechanical pre
cision with which young Francis
Ouimrt ovrr this same course sub
dued yie liritish professionals Yar
don and Kay in 1913.
Kvans was iierrliss. Where Sweet,
scr gained some. of his advantage
ovrr Jones by chipping- mashi nib
licks to the cup,. Kvans played per
fectly to the green and .then perfectly
to fhe cup.. In the presence of such
play young Knepper, who had him
self nipped the little hopes of Oui
niet, of Tolley and Torrance of the
liritish team, found himself the stud,
cut, admiring rather than rivaling,
stocking up oo strokes, to equip him
self to go further another time. Twice
he was almost agape when he saw
or was told that Kvans' approach or
his drive had struck the flag marking
the hole. In the end, Kvans let up
a little with a lead if 12 holes, and
his play obviously, fell off.
Svveetser, conqueror . of Jesse E.
Guilford, last year's champion in a
hard match yesterday, was no lenient
with his opponent today, whose junior
he is by one month. .With a morning
card of 69. one below the competitive
record for the course, the Yale lad
proved that hi advance in the tourna
ment was no flash. He allowed lob
by to win only two holes of the
match. . m
Stages Rally.
The Atlanta lad did not go down
without a struggle. Beaten in five
sucessive holes in the first half of the
morning round to stand six down at
the turn, he came back in 34, two un
der par, but was able to win only one
hole in nine, Seven successive holes
were halved, two of them in'less than
par and the others in par. The run
was broken only when Sweetscr took
three putts and conceded Jones an 18
inch putt and the hole at the 17th.
Then they halved the next, the 18th,
in par four. On this round the watch
was won and lost.
Kvans, leading Knepper six up at
the end of the morning round turned
the afternoon battle into a debacle
hy winning seven of the next nine
holes, l'laying cold, mechanical golf
in which drives, iron shots and putts
flew or rolled with deadly accuracy
for their objectives, the only Ameri
can to win the open and amateur
championships in one year simply
crushed his brilliant but less expert
ei.ced opponent.
Kvans nave an inkling of what was
to come by taking the opening hole
of the match with a pur four when
tlit youth misM'd a short putt.
Knepper held Kvans even for the
nest two, hut dropped the fourth and
I till holes by shoit or over play of
the greens. Nuddv just misled an

Chicago, Sept. 8.-(By A. P.)
Four Philadelphia twirh-rs failed to

Chicago, 6 to 0, Wilbur Cooper,
star pirate southpaw, turned in his
20th victory of the season.
Cincinnati climbed to third place,
ousting the Cubs, by pounding out a
