Omaha Grain
Omaha, Sept.!, 8.
Foreign cables were sharply , ligh
er today and our markets all con
tinued on the upgrade wheat and
oati ahowing the most strength,
prospects of cooler weather and
showers caused some realizing in
corn,' that ffrain, however, ruled
somewhnt higher than last night's
close. Prospective settlement of the
rail strike and a somewhat better in
quiry for export corn and rye caused
a more optimistic feeling. , It was
said that Frame would have to im
port between 55,000,000 and 75,000,
000 bushels of wheat before next
harvest, mainly from the United
States, Canada and Argentine. Fall
plowing has been delayed by dry
weather in practically all sections of
the winter wheat belt. . '"
The run of receipts were light,
Omaha receiving only 64 cars of
wheat, 41 cars of corn, 19 cars of
oats and a total of 131 cars, against
253 cars last year. Total shipments
were 131 cars as compared with 214
cars a year ago.
Cash wheat in the Omaha morket
was in good demand at prevailing
prices. The offerings were cleaned
up at unchanged to a cent higher,
the market being generally- lc high
er. Corn was in active demand with
prices unchanged to 'Jc higher. Oats
were generally fc higher. Rye was
quoted l,j2c higher and barley
nominally unchanged.

Chicago Grain
By CHARLES D. MICHAELS.
Omahn Me Lew. Win.
Chicago. Sent. 8, Grain markets
showed a firmer undertone the greater
part ol the iUy. While there was
break toward the- last on evening up
for the governrneut report, due after
the close, Iotei were not large.
Wheat doted Jc higher on Sep
temher and unchanged to Me lower
on the deferred futures. Corn was
't(i he loweroats unchanaed to Wc
higher and rye WiHc higher. There
was a more con I id en t tone among
wheat bulls throughout the day. I.iv
erpool closed VnVA higher. There
was heavy buying of October at Win
nipeg by exporters with reports of a
liberal business having been done.
Hedging pressure in the northwest
was much higher, due to rains over
the Canadian northwest. Shorts in
September here wer free buyers. It
wrnt to l Hc under December. There
also was buying by cash houses to
remove hedges against 130,000 bushels
hard winter sold to the seaboard.
Movement Light.
Movement of winter wheal la relatively
light. Premluma on epot were firmer for
hard and lo up on red. Rtceipta, II cara.
.strength abroad waa due to lighter Ar
gentine and Aueirallan offerings. Senti

Torn held within range uf H9e.
with rather general evening up. Local
longa aold freely toward the lt, making
tha final decline, although the bulk of
tha day'a trade waa at higher figurea than
tha prevlnua clnee. Private crop reporta
continue to Indliate deterioration over a
wide territory. Caah premiums wero un
changed with receipt! 414 cara. The tea
board reported 100, 001 buahelg aold for
export And bought a Ilk quantity hero.
' (lata Tight.
September oala acted tight and went to
Ho over December at ona time, buying
by belated ehorta and apreadera being a
factor. Strong commlaalon houaaa took
tha delayed deliveries'. There waa aleo
buying of Heptember and aeillng of May.
Receipt, 71 cara, with premiums firm.
Country offerlnga fair.
Rye showed mora activity, with Sep
tember up IHo st on time and aold tven
with December. Buying by aeveral caah
houeea and ehorta was responsible for tha
upturn. Thero wero reporta of a largo
expprt demand with numaroua Inquiries
for varlnua ahipmenta. Houaea with east
ern and northwestern connections sold
Heptember snd bought December, with
closing of spreada between Chicago and
Winnipeg, the litter being bought. Caah

The government crop report received
after tha cloa v disappointing to the
bulls of) corn, showing mors than gen
erally expected by 11,000,000 to 71.000.000
bushels. The loas of 141.000.000 bushels
fnr th monlh was mors than half In
Nebraaka, Houth Dakota and Ksnaaa. The
eatlmata of 177,000,000 buahala of aprlng
wheat waa slightly above prlvats eatl
matea, The gain waa mainly In North
Dakota. Oats were lea than generally
counted on snd 4.000.000 bushels over
last month's returns. A great many local
operatnra ara bearlah on all grains, while
aeveral of the etrongeet and moat active
houses are bullish. Of 1st they have
been ehle to hold values up.
Hhould the weather, map ahow good
general ahowera over th west tomorrow
It would not be aurprltlng to see a break
In corn.
Many of the grain recelvera here aasert
that th corn crop haa not been hurt by
recant firing. Abnormal tesnperaturce
have prematurely ripened the crop all over
the country and yields cannot be fully
deteVmlned, except by huaklnga.
Northwestern tradera were fair sellers
of wheat futures here today. Buying of
September and aeillng of December at 2c
to lVio difference and buying of May and
aeillng of December hy local Interests
featured a good part of tha trading, the
spread on tha latter waa Bite, moat of the
trade having the December-May spread
the other wsy.
The Indian government Is expected to
remove the embargo on exporta of wheat
thla month providing the i rains prove
favorable and pricea decline.
Date me.eatfHa from Winnipeg Indicated
that exporters had bought around S. 000,000
buahela October wheat there In the last
two daya. Kales of Manltobaa were said to

Financial
NEW YORK TIMES.
Omaha He I ,eed Mir.
N'ew York, Sept. f Neither the
poitive vetoing of the idea of a "gen
eral strike" in response to the Daugli
rrty injunction, nor the pretty plain
indication that the railway shopmen
were trying to make terms, was at ill
unexpected by intelligent financiers.
The proposal of a day s suspension of
work and wages as a gesture of dis
approval was 400 absurd to have been
taken seriously by any one, and the
shopmen's rase is now merely one in
which the choice is between accept
ing complete defeat or authorising the
return to work which appears to have
been derided upon already by a good
part of t'ie strikers.
Nevertheless, the overnight news in
both directions naturally encouraged
cheerfulness. Jf it did not cause sur
prise, it served at any rate to complete
the restoration of mental balance and
calm judgment of the situation wheifc
were so greatly upset a few weeks
ago, when both Washington and Wall
street were talking privately of the
paralysis of American industry or the
social upheaval.
Ad-atMe Irregular.
Today's stock market moved la ac
cordance with tha cheerful Impressions
of III day. The advance In pri-e were
Irregularly distributed, but In eome slot ka
very emphatic algna of 1 or I points In
a number of active railway shares were
me moat interesting part or the move
ment. Traneactlona were large end'nilat
of the market ended at or close to the
beat prices of the day.
The bond market was, In anme reaperts,
more Imprcseive, for the reason that the
edvanre In bond l.rlcea could not ha aa-
crlbed to the day's nawa, but Indicated
other and larger Influences. Iloih pros
pective continuance or eaey money and
an abundant supply of accruing Inveat
men capital were among the caueea for
the continued upward movement: un
doubtedly, also, the recent pauas in offer
ings of new sei-urltles has been an es
aentlsl factor in raising the Investor's bid
for first class outstanding bonds. It
atlll remalne to he determined how far
the removal or poatponcment of Kurope'a
acuta political eronomlc queatlon will re
move also the double whlrh In the aver
age Investor's mind hsve Istely surrounded
Kuropesn securities. There was a very
almllsr atmosphere of dlatruat exactly a
year ago, yet with, laat aprlng's remark-
aoie movement ot taoaa securities sb a
equel.
Wall Ntrreit Topics.
The United Statee Hl-1 corporation
and tha independent producers are ex
pected to announce shortly the price for
ateel rails for 1123 delivery, now 40 a
ton, reduced from 47 a ton aome time
eg".
With the operations of the railroads for
the flrat seven months of the year now
a matter of record, railway statisticians
have begun to compute the probsble earn
ing! of aome of tho larger companies for
tne entire year. The ureal Northern,
for one, has enrned a net operating In
come for the seven months of 16.449,000,
which means thlt in order to esrn 7 per
cent on Its suc It would hsve to show
an average monthly net fnr the rest of
the year of 1.1,307,000, or 23 per cent more
than the monthly average of earnlnga for
the last five month, of 1921. The North
ern Pacific reported net of 14.692,000 for
the first aeven montha thia year, ao that
It could not Bhow 7 per cent earned for
lta Htockholdera unleaB It marie a monthly
average of 1.1,063,000 net during the bal
ance of the year, or an increase over a
year ago of 32 per cent.
The tone of the bond market waa tn
tho main strong, but activity waa on a
aomcwhat reduced scale and there waa
evidence of profit-taking In iasuea whclh
had been atrong features moat of the
week. The railway section continued to
keep up the pace, puraued alnce the labor
aituatlon began to Improve.
