A little known champion, Rudy

per victory by two up wa gained
with a gallery of hundred ringing
round the greeni, while he, won the
latt three hole in a birdie two, a
birdie three and a par four. It wai
the only match of the day that weot
to tne home green.
Bobby Jones Win.
A potential champion, Bobby
Jones of Atlanta, playing against an
early handicap of two down, brought
hii deadly putting opponent, J. J.
Beedle, Philadelphia, to even terms
at the 18th hole and then, having
been ahead all morning, was never
behind all afternoon and won out,
three up and one to play.
Chick Kvani, Chicago's champion
of champion, was called upon for
his beit for the veteran, John Ander
son of New York. It was not until the
17th hole that Evans gained his vic
tory. Pairings of tomorrow will bring
together Sweelzer and Hunter: Guil
ford and Lewis; Mcl'hail and Johns
ton; Gardner and Jones; Godchaux
and Rotan; Evans and Fownes;
Tolley and Atilbarh. Knepper and
Ouimet, play beginning at 9:30.
One Britisher Left. '
In a broad way, perhaps the most
striking general result - of today's
matches was the reduction to one
player Tolley of the British effort
to w'in the American title. The team
that started out in qualifying play
numbered eight players, declared to
constitute; the most formidable com
bination ever sent out of England.
Torrance and Aylmer, the later a 6 4
victim of Ouimet, were the Britfsh
casualties today,'
The extent to which the biggest
match of the day developed out of an
obscure pairing was shown when no
cards could be had of the Knepper
Torrance morning round. Even the
standing was variously reported, but
the outstanding fact was that Knep
per was down five or six holes. It
was five, he and Torrance agreed
later.
They set out this afternoon, that
way. After halving the! first hole in
fives, Knepper began to chop away
his handicap. Par four at .he second,
third, fourth and fifth, two won and
two halved, left him only three down.
Torrance was opposing with all the
golf craft he had. Knepper scored
a birdie three; Torrance did the same.
Knepper made a three again on the
next but Torrance was two down.
Knepper Wins Eighth Hole.
Knepper won the eighth with a par
four, and was one dpwn. By this
time the word had gone from green
to green, traveling down the fair
ways from gallery to gallery, that a
golfing battle extraordinary was on.
and from that time on the play was
watched by hundreds.
Halving the ninth, Knepper and
Torrance turned to the 10th tee to
start the trip home. Each was on
with his second; Knepper three feet
away; Torrance four. Instead of
conceding Knepper' putt, Torrance
rtllowed him to make it. It dropped.
Knepper in turn forced Torrance to
putt and Torrance failed. Knepper
had made the match all even, had
brought a lost cause up to an even
chance. The gallery applauded.
The long 11th was halved, Tor
rance making a beautiful shot to the
green. The 12th with threes; the next
with fours were halved also. Tension
was great. . Putts were measured
with care. All ran true.
On the 14th, Torrance seemingly
turned the tide back again when h
ran down a .JO-putt for a four, while
Knrpper required five. The Sioux
City lad wa again one down. Knep
per wavered at the next hole, miastim
ihort pun for a four and haNed it
in five. Then he began to ihoot.
On the short loth he on th
grreii Iroin the tee and pulled 17

Patterson had hi backhand work

deeper. He went to the net but few
time.
fn the second match today Ander.

more brilliant of tho two, but bis

sort of game that his teammate, Pat

across court for placements that
ended many of the long ralhe. So
many of the Australian's drives came
so fast that Tilden made no attempt
