it de not rrit upon WatlmiKtun.
Tor tlie prrtent no other contuljr o(
ficert are available for the New Cat
castle pott, it it declared, and in any
i.ne tint government it immediataly
interested in having the doubt which
ha been cast Upon itt reprrentative
cleared away, one way or the other.
Official here will lint discu the
incident in detail, hut it it apparent
that cancellation of the exequatur
came a a aurpritc, in view of the
fart that the anion wat tjkenliefore
the State department had completed
it investigation into the British
charge that the New Cattle consul
and vice contul had improperly in
fluenced traveler to patronize vettel
of the United States shipping boird
in ditcriinination of British thip.
It wa learned that President Hard
ing hat interetted himself in the cane,
and while he recognize that addi
tional evidence may be produced a
tne investigation continue, he be
lieve nothing ha developed to the
prettnt time to reflect discredit on
the two men. Stale department offi
ficial aid there wa no information
in their possession upon which dis
ciplinary action agaimt the consul
would be justified.
First representations received In
Washington from the British foreign
office, containing affidavit alleging
that the New Castle consulate offi
cers had exercised improper author
ity in persuading traveler to use
American ships, it wa authoritative
ly aid, were answered with a request
that the exequatur held by the con
tul thould not be cancelled until an
investigation by thi government
could be made. The evidence ub
mitted did not satisfy officials here,
it was said, that the charge had
been substantiated and they asked
for time to make an investigation be
fore final action was taken by them.
Ambassador Harvey ha been
fully advised of the situation as it is
viewed by official here. He also has
been informed that the policy of thi
government would be to keep the
consulate ciosea at least until die
investigation being made is concluded
and the government i able to select
new officer to, take over the New
Castle post. Any request by Great
Britain for reopening of the con
sulate, meanwhile, will be answered
in thi light.
