THE SUNDAY BEE: OMAHA. 'AUGUST 20. 1D2 5 C The Married Hilen Diuort the Decepuvt Pn.ig lenses of Visionary Promoter, AH ht sordidnris , the cheap notd loom, the dust under the bed, ih Stars on tlx bath red golden oak furniture, and the ink stain on the I'mgv caiptt, were cruelly exposed by th late adrruoon sun. An unkindly ray shone at rot Mrs. Motion's laded Vutmno and tier soiled boudoir slitris as she sat listlessly en th sagging couih, "I shouldn't have let ou rom lre-u isn't often I let anyone be l"nd th semes," she rose to draw down a baiting shad against th iiieri'ilris sun. "Hut it hasn't always been like tliis you've traveled." Helen glanced ft I lie two trunk plaieied Willi foreign labels. "You'ie had a great i.l." "Yes, mi traveled. Occasion ally, when things are flush, or whrn ii'a necessary lu put up a front, He lite, St a Smart hotel but mot i f the tune w re stranded in shabby I. .lining,," "I he night you dined with us Mr, Uolton spoke of that mica stork he was interested in. Didn't that turn mit all right?" "Ihry never tuin out all right! lie's always promoting soma lug themes snd it always tails through. A year ago it was radium, then am miied coal, thru a co-operative pack ing plant, and now its synthetic platinum." "on mean he isn't practical?" murmured Helen. "I'raitical? He's an impractical viv'oii.iry promoter! How I loathe th it woid -promoter! I think l red s square 1 want to think i', but the men be gels in with Oh, it's all s'.'ih shady, shpprty business!" "Hut be was successful when you vvrre fit st married everyone thought so." Helen recalled the wedding of Willa Ma -on to the dashing J' red Motion, who had taken their little Miourl town by storm. "What stas he promoting when I married him?" Willa smiled wanly. "I've almost forgotten. Oh, yes, cop per mines. That fell through, but I didn't let anyone know. I've kept ii the jii rti use. I still w rite home blowing letter." "And you haven't bren back?" ven tured Helen. "Yes, once for a week when Fred had a little money. And we put it over no one suspected, not even mother, 1 was determined they should think we were prosperous arid they slid I The 'Trumpet' had a long article about Mis. Frederick Uolton visiting her old home with hrr ili.-.tingui-licd husband." "Yes, everyone at home thinks you're prosperous if that' any com fort." "And they're going to keep on thinking it," grimly. "That's why 1 steal stationery from the smart hotels to write home on. Oh, I've learned to bluff, too. Eight year with Fred would teach any woman that. I've learned to pay $15 for evening slip prrs when I need warm underwear." Rising abruptly, she opened the cheap oak wardrobe in the corner. On one side hang a few rather shabby garments; on the other, a Black velvet evening gown, a black and silver brocade wrap, and a man' dress suit. "These are our evening togs part of Fred's business assets. However hard up we get, he never pawns these. We must always be ready to dine out with any of hi rich prospects." "You looked wonderful the night you dined with us," Helen recognized the black velvet gown. "That's a Faquin model. I got it in Paris five years ago. A blackvelvct is always safe. You can wear it year in and year out. I can change the waist with a bit of real lace and make it look like another gown." Closing the wardrobe door, she flung herself bark on the couch. "Oh, I'm so sick of it! The make shifts, the lies! Always pretending something we're not. Fred always promises that whrn 'this deal' goes over, we'll be on Easy Street. Just help him 'put this over'." Again she rose, to rummage in a disordered top drawer for a hand kerchief. "I begged him last night to go to work real work! If it's only a job as a clerk where he'd Ret $25 a week, b t get it regularly. I'd gladly settle down in a three-room flat if I could only have a home." She dabbed her reddened eyes with a handkerchief. "For eight years I've lived in those trunks knocking around. from one hotel to another. And, oh, I'm so sick of it!" "Then your country home in Eng landyou don't own that any more?" "We never owned it outside of Fred's imagination! He's talked about it so long he really believes it. He's always inviting people to visit us there when they're in England. I'm terror stricken for fear someone who knows England will try to look it un." "Oh, I didn't know you had a dog," Helen welcomed the diversion of the little fox terrier with a bandaged paw that linmed from under the bed. "That's a poor little waif Fred nicked up on the street. He' always Kringing home som stray animal. He's the kindest man in th world and the most generous. That's why I can never le.vve him" "Kindness to animals makes up tar a great deal," Helen was strok ing rlie dog. ' Oh there's ro many fine things aSout Fred. He's so untetf'sh.
