RATTLESNAKES AND FEAR.
Right recently the public preu
rirried a tuteiiirnt that the Califor
iii. health department h prepared
to tend rattlrmakr nti-vrnin by air
tlti to prriom bitten by rlile
trukei.
I have clicwhrrc Mid that botullnu
antitoxin ha been supplied by air
plane whrn a group ft people had
been poisoned by rating (ood con
taining botulinuo.
l'hre two form of ditatrr are
thought arresting enough to inaugu
rate a new method of practicing med
icine. I once rode 20 milet in a
hone-drawn vehicle, holding a wom
an who had been bitten in the thumb
by a rt:lctiuke. With that recollco
t on in mind I am for the Hying
nuchine in cue of rattlesnake bite.
The antidote for rattlesnake bite
i kept at hand in the New Yyik
700. It can be bought in Ronton.
It ahould be possible to get it from
ie board of health of the states
w herein rattlesnake bite is occasional
ly reported.
In Indian and Egypt the govern
mrnt nee to it that anti-venin is
available, I am informed. The venom
oi the highly poioonout naket found
there poisons the nervoua system,
while that of the rattlesnake elisor
ganizet the blood. Therefore, the
anti-vein of those countries would not
help u.
But a oroduct specific against rat
tlesnake bite it available for some
people in some sections, as has been
Mated above. Why not in others? I
am sure the state laboratories would
comply with any considerable pub
lic demand.
I hope no one will think I am
c hanging positions on the snake ques
tion. Many people are kind enougn
to send me clippings about snake
bites. When these are gone over
and duplications are eliminated I find
the total comes down to about two
a vcar. . -
Five deaths from snake bite in
the United States a year is a liberal
estimate. .
Will C. Barnes had an interesting
article on rattlesnakes in a recent
number of American Forestry: He
quotes my statement that I had never
personally seen a fatality due to a
rattlesnake bite.
Mr. Barnes has had a very wide
experience. At one time he was a
wholesale and retail dealer in rat
tlesnakes. He has known of two
deaths due to rattlesnake bite one
in 1898, the other in 1899. The re
mainder of about a dozen folks he
has seen, bitten have recovered.
Since I am ' quoting from Mr.
Barnes story. I might as wrll give
his method of treating a rattlesnake
bite. He says: -
"Above all, do not lose your head.
Throw a tourniquet around the limb
above the point of bite. Slash the
wound, that it may bleed freely. Suck
a, much poison as possible out of
the wound. Ut course, spit out inc
poison and blood sucked, but i: a
little gets into the stomach it will
!o no harm.
"Once every ten to fifteen! min
utes loosen the tourniquet for a min
ute, then tighten it again.
"Inject a solution of permanganate
of potash into the wound. Throw
this in with a hypodermic syringe 'f
one is available. Induce sweating.
"If alcohol is given, never give
more than, a teaspoonful. People do
not recover because of the whisky
used but in spite of it."
As I read Mr. Barnes' report of
his two fatal cases it impressed me
that whisky poisoning was an im
portant contributing cause in the
death of one, at least.
If, in an experience extending over
a quarter of a century, Mr. Barnes
has seen only two fatal cases, and
both of these more than 20 years
;igo. rattlesnake bite is not often
t;ital. Nevertheless, there are peo
ple who greatly fear rattlesnake bite.
In fact, (fear is responsible for some
fif the symptoms following bite.
If it were generally known that a
specific was available there would be
less apprehension and, following a
hite; the factor of fear would be lessened.
' Plenty of Lime in Milk.
S. M. M. writes: "Not so long
;go yon printed an article in answer
to a mother regarding tuberculosis
hikI advising her, to give the child
lime.
"What I would like to know is
iust ivhat vou mean by that.
"I. How is a person to get lime
into the system? I am a victim of
consumption, so the subject is inter
csting to me and if lime would help
me. I would like to know, as 1 can
not take eggs in any form, and also
hnd it very difficult to drink milk.
"2. Is this a good sign in a tuber
culosis case? I still have my periods.
Or ts-this of no consequence?"
REPLY.
t. Milk is rich in lime. There are
.many preparations of lime sold in
drug stores. There are tablets, pills
and solutions.
2. It is a good sign.
Exert Yourself Less.
G. R. writes: "When I work or
Kert myself or walk, I have a sharp
ram in my 6hest, which makes me
short of breath.' Am 78 years of
ge. - -- . ' . .
"What would you advise me to do
for it? Do you think plaster would
help it?", ' ;
REPLY.
In a person of your age this
symptom means that the work or
the exercise is beyond the easy ca
pacity of your heart. t--Undertake
less. , ' ' - i
With a younger person it may
mean the same thing, but it fre
quently means nothing more seri
ous than worry and fear." . -
