Tom Moore and Betty Compson are co-starred at the Rialto theater in a timely comedy-drama, "Over the Border," an adventurous picture of booze runners. , Norma Talmadge is the chief attraction at the Moon the ater the first part of this week in a revival of "By Right of Purchase," while Eugene O'Brien takes the screen at the Em press in "A Prophet s Paradise." Mary Alden at World Mary Alden, (lie tcrren actrcii who made a hit in filmdom as the mother in "The Old NAt." will be en at the World theater this week m "The Man With Two Mother," written by Alice Durr Miller for the tilver sheet. Miss Alden has another "mother" role in this gay comedy of a young Irishman who is in the for tunate (or unfortunate) position of having two mothers. Paul Bern directed "The Man With Two Mothers" and has brought out the comedy and the Irish character izations with deftness and sympathy. Betty Compson, as the daughter of the man who smuggles liquor in wholesale quantities across the Unit ed States-Canadian boundary line, and the sweetheart of a Royal Mounted policeman charged with en forcing the law, has a fine emotional role, while the part opposite her, that of a mounted policeman, is ably played by Tom Moore. The picture was taken in the mountains, amid the snows, and is pictorially very beau tiful. Norma Talmadge at Moon. "By Right of Purchase," which open today at the Moon theater for Others in the cast are Hallam Cooly, I dy. deals with the most ex Fred Huntly, Monti Collins and Wil liam Elmer. Ethel Clayton and Chaplin at Strand. The evil's of hypnotic control forms an interesting phase of "For the Defense," a dramatic picture star ing Ethel Clayton, at the Strand this week. The story tells of the mysterious slaying of Dr. Kasimir, a Hindu physician who employs hypnotism as a means of healing. He becomes in fatuated with one of his beautiful feminine patients, Anne Woodstock, played by Miss Clayton, and upon hearing she is to be married to Christopher Armstrong, the district attorney, lures her into his studio nd on the pretext of a final treatment, subjects her to his influence. She re turns home dazed and bewildered, not knowing what has happened and soon afterward Kasimir is found murdered in his offices. K - attraction at the Strand this week. Thia is not the least bit surprising for the comedian deserves a second and maybe a third showing of his famous comedies. Chaplin is the greatest of all screen artists and very one of his comedies is good inough to come hack. 1 Tom Moore at Rialto. "01' Joe Bush" and a lot of his hairv relatives are seen in "Over the Border," featuring Betty Compson and Tom Moore at the Rialto theater this week. The great silent places of the north have been cast for a leading part in "Out of the Silent North," Frank Mayo' latest production, which comes to the Moon theater next Thursday. The picture has a back ground of scenic beauty rarely shown upon the screen. Towering mountains rear their hoary heads above the snow-filled valleys in which the action of the photoplay takes place. The changing seasons put a different aspect upon the set ting of the picture. Amid these splen dors of nature a simple tale is un folded, a story of the true nobility with which the creator had endowed an ignorant frontiersman. Tom Meighan at Muse.
