Larry's
Big Mistake

THANKSGIVING
Are you one of the thankful? Have you counted your blessings? Can't you
remember the bountiful things that Hastings, the community or yourself
enjoyed the past year? Oft times we let dissatisfaction over-rule the reali
zation of the good things we have, but now on this Thanksgiving let us re
solve to be grateful for what we have and will receive, that we may en
chance the welfare of those about us as well as ourselves.
(, 1H3, Wttrn Niwppr Union.)
IT WAS a long cry to the days when
Larry was a crook. lie' lived1 with
his wlfo and Little Don In an old brick
house In tho suburbs and earned a
respectable living as a truckster. Also
his mother-in-law, whom he detested,
boarded with htm and contributed sub
stantially to the family Income Ilia
mother-in-law was supposed to be
rich ; nobody knew how much she had,
but by tho way she dominated the
house bIio ought to have been a mil
llonnlress.
It was a tvvo-fanilly house. The
other part wus occupied by an old fe
malo tnlscr. Oh, they were n pretty
pair, the mlseress and the mother-In-law.
And, being much of a muchness,
they were us thick as two thieves to
gether. Larry had fallen on evil days. He
was sick of the whole business. He
wanted to get out, but Sirs. Lurry
wouldn't leave her mother.
"Don't bo silly, Lurry," she said.
"Mn Isn't strong, and she may croak
any day, nnd nobody knows how much
that woman's worth. It may be mil
lions." Lnrry grunted. Privately ho was
resolved to beat It, mother-in-law or
no, nnd then present an ultimatum to
his wlfo to follow or not, us she
pleased.
Then came the great discovery. The
cellar of tho house was common prop
erty. Under tho cement, cunningly
concealed, Larry came upon a box.
He opened It. It was full of Jewelry,
which his practiced eye- assessed ut
once us worth four or live thousand
dollars.
It belonged to the old miser. No
doubt of that. Also the box hadn't
been opened for months. Larry could
see that.
He did not hesitate a minute. What
use was It to the old woman, when,
In Larry's hands, It meant freedom
from mother-in-law?
Without a qualm he quietly ab
stracted the contents. In his Hist
spare time he took the stuff to Isaacs,
tho fence.
"Thought you was out of the busi
ness, Larry?" Isaacs grinned.
"Well, I come hack," said Larry.
"That stuffs worth live thousand If
It's worth n bean."
Isaacs Inspected It. "Give you eight
hundred, Larry," lie said.
"Say, what you giving mo I Two
thousand!"
"Mebbe I'd make It nine." said
Imiucs meditatively.
"Fifteen hundred or I take It away,"
said Larry.
They compromised on n thousand,
which was paid over on the nail, nnd
Larry climbed aboard his truck and
went about his business, conscious of
the htiKe wad In his hip pocket.
Ho had never felt so pleased with
himself. If tho old niKer oxer xxent
to look at her hoard, It might not he
for months, and meanxvhlle Lurry
could have made good his escape. A
IhouMtml dollars xxould furni-h theia
hi st.xlo wllli a line apartment in an
other part of the tuxvn, and there '
need lie no more motlier-lii law.
Yes, lie relleeled, ho xxould certainl.x
have In present Mill.x with an ultima
tum about mother-in law. And it xva
unfortunate that the old woman was
so thick with the nilsero.-s downstairs,
When Larry was gone mil the discov
ery xvus made. Misplclun m'glit point
to him.
Still, nothing could he pinved. And
liny fears that Larry hud were re
moved b.x the feeling of that wad In
his hip-pocket.
lie made his wa.x home rejoicing,
the ultimatum iilit'udy framed. Mtlly
met him at the door in tears.
"Lurry," she sobbed, "Lurry, moth
er's had a stroke."
Concealing his glee, Larry went up
stairs. The old ludy was lying on tho
bed, breathing heavily. Beside her
stood the doctor. Ho turned to an
bwur Larry's unspoken question.
"I'm afraid there's not much hope
for her," he said.
And that was a true prophecy, for
five days later the old lady died.
The will xx-us rend. The vindictive
old xvotnun hud left all her property to
her other daughter, "on nccouut of my
daughter Mllly having married beneath
her and disgraced the family name."
Mllly's solo legacy consisted of "my
valuable jewelry, being n diamond
pendant, two emerald bracelets, a pearl
necklace . . . appraised at six
thousand seven hundred dollars."
"Where can It be, Larry?" demand
ed Mllly. "It IsnH In tho bank It isn't
oh, It seems to'haxo been a delusion
of mother's. I remember those things
when I was a girl, but she must baxu
sold themw hat's the matter, l.arr.x?"
"A xv, nothing," grunted Larry. "I
guess thill's part of the. old cat's re-
, venue. I'erglt it!" '
Queensware
Have you planned to have the folks
home for Thanksgiving dinner?
Have you replenished your stock of
glassware or china? The queens
ware section in the downstairs store
is a department most complete in
china and cut glass for the table,
dishes for the kitchen and various
pieces for decoration. A wide selec
tion of dinner sets such as English-Richmond-American-Domestic
pat
terns. Bavarian and Haviland are
rt on display both in the department
and in the window.

Linens
The delightful appearance of the
dinner table is due to the linen.
Our linen sections do not boast of
radically reduced prices, but upon
quality comparison with materials
elsewhere you will find that here
you can realize a much higher grade
of merchandise than that of the
others. One does not buy linen
every day, so it is necessary that
the investment for a life time be a
good one. Linen section 1st
floor east, at the rear.
The Great Festival closed as per schedule last Saturday evening and was a
constant whirlwind of rapid business. The rumble has not died as things
swing into a mighty Yule Tide campaign of joy. Visit the store, see Toyland
open in several days, and see the many wonderfuls through this huge store
of 25 busy departments.
