In taking t lie chair Mr. Stoncr said
that he was nvturc that thero wore men
present who hold opposite views in ic
gurd to tho bill before tho legislature
regarding accepting Federal Aid for
roads but thero wiib no class of clique
mid that uuoli an,d every one present
desired tho best for Nebraska and
Webster county. Me s.iid that this
was the first time in tliu histoiy of the
Cuiiuty so far as ho knew that the busi
ness men and the farmers got together
for a discussion of common inluicstH
Tho bill was read and also the letter
from state engineer Johnson which
gave the facts ami conditions regard
ing tho accopting of the Federal road
act. Mr. Heobe was called to the plutj
form and delivered a comprehensive
and able address miintaiuing tho pos
ition that Nebraska would greatly gain
by accepting tho national provisions.
Mr. Stoncr, Mr. Vance. Mr. Iveenoy
and others were opposed to taking
hasty action, they wanted to know
whut they wem doing so they could
act intelligently.
After a little skirinisiling it develop
ed that overybody was in favor of
g lod toads and a resolution Dually pre
vailed asking our niombois of tho legis
lature to accept Federal road money
provided a way was formulated by
which each and every county and post
road would receive a just shine.
This was otio of the best meetings
over hold in tho city and it is undoubt
edly the foro runner of many more
which ought to bo welcomed by both
farinors and moruhtints.

Lincoln's Birthday Feb. 12th
f$te&
1917
At a public meeting held on last
Thursday inght lor the purpose of dis
cussing tho I'i'ik'ial i ouil a'ppi'opi lat ion
coiisider.ilile Intoicst was shown. Mr
F. K Payne, and as a ineniber of
the Fanner's Union, expressed himself
lu favor of accofiting govern uieut aid,
but that tho state manager was against
the proposition. The Union is oppos
ed to the measure because it thinks all
the money should be spent as It de
sires Geo II. Overlng explained to them
how the money thus lei'eived would lie
spent on all toads out side of towns
mid cities and how tho farmer would
derive the most benefit, f loin this ex
penditure. Aleo that under tho gov
ernment supci vision all money would
be spent in a manner that would do
tho most good nud not on any guess
work.
We wish to btato to our renders that
we are in favor of this manner of road
building, as should every loyal oiti.en,
as we feel that better roads could bo
const ructed and maintained by govern
ment apptopiiatloii and supervision
than can lie done mi lor the preiciit
sybtem of road work.

J Although everything commercially is at a high
tension and we have made our purchases for spring
selling in a conservative way, yet we will be in a
position to offer more of a variety of merchandise
than we have ever shown we will have larger
