This only shows how somo of tho human raco aro get ting back to whoro the startod. What troublo tho dyod-in-tlio-wool populist does have! Ho talks against banks and bankers and against tho railroads, and then goes to his conven tion and nominates a banker for con gross and a railroad attornoy for gov ernor. While we believe that something should bo done to forward the shipping of American goods in American ships, nevertheless wo do not boliovo in boun ties to ship owners to carry our freight. There are other means of furthering American shipping which wo boliovo will be more permanont in thoir effects than the paying of bounties. If prosperity does not couio to tho merchants of Red Cloud this fall there is no such thing as prosperity. Now is tho time 'to go aftor business and koep it from going to Kansas City, Omaha or the mail order oitabllsh menta la Chicago and other large towns. Show the fartiiors and people who do sond away for goods how they can do bettor by buying at homo. Talk to them through the mediums that go go into their homes. Talk through the local papers, which go into tho homes of tho pooplo and which aro read and discussed in the homes, Mako your advertisomont say something more than merely "special." Make it say something of interost to the consumer. The merchant who follows this plan is morally curtain of getting a liberal shnro of what is certain to bo an ex ceedingly good season. Ho should bear in mind tliatTiiK Chihk reaches more people than any othor paper published in tho county and wo aro constantly adding now names to our list. Tho President's attitude ou tho trust question is attracting unusual attention Rupresoutative Littlollold, of Maine, it ii announced, will introduce a bill pro. Viding for effective trust control which will have tho support of the adminis tration. The President regard the trust question as a thoroughly live issue a problem ready for immediate solii tiun, and it is stated that he can lie depended upon to push the measure with all lite strength of li is administra tion His earnestness in tho matters is nut to be mistaken, tin. I if Cocgic"s concludes likewise thoio is good pio.s peel for tho enactment of anti-trust legislation next winter. In undertak ing tln eouisi, the President is, of coutsc, tintagoni.ing powerful in llliences. Ho knows that tho great bus iness inteiests regatd his attitude with misgiving, and he is frank in saying that he has no intention of keeping "hands off" but at the same lime ho tolls those about him tiiat ho will never support any legislation which can pus aibly bring ubout any thing in thu nature of a business panic Frunkliu Froo Press. The total assess ment of the city is $112,025 and a 15 mill levy, provided all taxes wetc paid, would amount to S.'.l.'W 10, but as the taxes are seldom all paid tho a mount rolluctod varies between $1,000 and $1,800 per year Now, what wo would like to suggest to the earnest consider ation of the city council and taxpayers is that, as the present bonds may bo paid at the option of tho city, a now series bo issued to pay off the old bonds and that tho now series bo made to draw not nolo than 4 or percent interest By doing this and continu ing the 13 per cent levy an interest fund can bo created which will eventu ally pay tho whole of tho bonds. Thoro would bo a saving each year, if tho now bonds drew only i per cent, of $470 in tho way of interest, which would bo nearly sufficient to pay off ono bond oach year; or this amount might bo applied to extend tho water mains, as thoro aro many proporty owners who do not now uso city water on accouut of tho great expense Wo boliovo tho city could easfly iloat 4 por cent bonds and would urge tho council to tako this matter up and at least try what may bo dono with it.
