The Heavenly Armies Again, I rcmaak that those of our departed Christian friends, who in this world have very strong military spirit, arc now in armies celestial and'oul in bloodless battle. There are hundreds of people born soldiers. Thev cannot help it. They belong to regiiucnU in time of peace. They cannot hear a drum or a fife without trving to keep step to the music They are Chris tians and, wheu they fight, thev fight on the right side. Now, when" these, our Chnstiau friends who had natural and military spirit, entered heaven, they entered the celestial army. The door of heaven scarcely opens but vou hear a military demonstration. David cried out, "The chariots of God are twenty thousand." Elislhi Baw the mountains filled with celestial cavalrv. St. John said, "The armies which are in heaven followed him on white hor ses.'' Now, when those who had the military spirit on earth sanctified en tered glory, I suppose they right awav enlisted in some heavenly campaign; they volunteered right awav. There must needs be in heaven sold'iers with a soidserly spirit. There are grand pa rade days when the King review the troops. There must be armed escort sent out to bring up from earth to hea ven those who were more than con querors. There must be crusades ever being fitted out for some rnirt of Goi's dominion battles, bloodless, groanleas paiuless. Angels of evil to be fought down and fought. Other rebellious worlds to be conquered. Worlds to be nut to the torch. Worlds to be saved. Worlds to le demolished. Worlds to be sunk. Worlds to be hoisted. Be side tltat in our Own world there are batt!es for the right and against the wrong where we must have the heaven ly military. That is what keeps us Chnstiau refoamers so buovanu So few good men against so many bad men, so few ehurches against so'manv grogshops, so many pnre printing presses against so many polluted nrin tug presses, and yet we are huovant and courageous, because while" we know that the anuies of eril ia the world are larger iu numbers tkaathe army of the truth, there are celestial cohorts iu the air fighting oaeer side. I remark again, that all our depart ed Christian friends who in this world were iaeieaately fonl of music are still regaling that taste in the world celestial. The Bible says so much about the iyusi of heaven that it can not all be figurative. Why all this talk about hallelujuA and choirs on the ttl.i&j and tnunpets anil harp and ora tories r-ccininglv. and organs? The Bi ble over and over again speaks of the songs of heaven. If heaven had no songs of its own a vast number oftho on earth would have been taken up by the earthly emigrnts. Surely the Chris tian at death docs not lose his memo ry. Then there must be millions of souls in Heaven who know "Corona tiou" and "AntiocTi" and "31 1. IWah and "Old Hundred." The leader of the eternal orchestra need only once tap his baton and all heaven will be ready for the halleluja. If heaven should ever get out of muic, Thomas Hastings ami and Lowell, Ma-on and Bradbury would .-tart up a hundred old magnificent chorals. But with the new oug that John mentions, and the various doxologics alluded to and the importation, of oiib- lunar har monics, a Christian fond of muic, dy ing, will have an abundance of regale ment. What though the voice be gone in death, what though the ear be fallen iu disoldtion, are you therefore to conclude that the spirit will have no power to mako or catch sweet sounds? Cannot the soul sing? How often we compliment some exquisite singing by eaying, "There was so much houl iu her music." In heaven it will be all soul until body after awhile comes up in the resurrection, and then there will be an additional heaven. Cannot the soul hear? If it can hear, then it can hear music. Do not, therefore, let it be iu your household when some mem ber leaves for heaven, as it is iu some households-, that you clone the piano and uuMring the harp for two years be-becatb-e the lingers that used to play tn tlmtii ir. .itill Vnn tuii.it rninpin. bcr that thev have better instruments of music where they are. You ask me," Do they have real burps and real trumpet aiid real organs?" 1 do uot Know, rome wise acres sav pis i live. y - .. . . ......... ... .. there are no such thinrs in heaven I do not know, but I should not be surprised if the God who made all the mountain, and all the hills, and all the forests, and all the mortals of the earth, mid all the growths of the uni verse,! should not bo surprised if He could, if He had a mind, make a few harps and trumpet ami organs. Grand old Haydn, sick ond worn out, was car ried for the last time into the muic hall, there he heard his oratorio of the "Creation." History says that as the orchctra came to that famous passage "Let there be light!" the whole audi ence ra-e and cheered, ami Haydn waved his hand toward heaven and said, "It comes from there!" Over whelmed with his own music, he was carried out in his chair, and as he came to the door he sjire.nl his hand toward the orchestra as in benediction. Haydn was right when he waved his hand towanl and said, "It conies from there." Music was born in heaven, aud it will ever have its highest throno iu heaven, and I want you to under stand that our departed friends who were passionately fond of music here arc now at the headquarters of harmo ny. I think that the grand old church tunes that died when your grandfather died have gone with "them lo heaven. hen those tunes died they did not-1 stay on earth, and they could not have j lcen banished to perdition, and so I think they must be in the corridors of alnllaster and Lebanon cedar.
