Gould has donated $5,000 for tho relief of tho yellow fever sufferers at Memphis. lie received tbe following an swer: Memphis, Sept 5. To Jay Gould Ef-q., N. Y.: Your handsome donation of $5,000 to the Howard Association of Memphis, to bo used in relieving the rick is gratefully accepted. Tho grand senti ment you express, to Continue our noble work, and if oar calls tor help throughout the United Stales is not heeded that you would foot the bilk, has moved and strengthened us in our faith in the cause we are now engaged in. Such liberality SB you have shown will, we have no doubt, find a responsive echo in the char itable in the Nation. The political cauldron is boiling in this county, and tbe outlook is favorable for one of tho most vigorous and sharply con tested fights in tbd political arena that we have ever witnessed. Candidates are numerous, and of all grades, (and we was about to say color) from the lowest walks of life to the highest attained in this country. Men with brains and men with out brains or anything else to recommend them, arc alike striving for an opportuni ty to sacrifice themselves on the alter of their country for the sake of the "dear people." Every honorable means, and we are sorry to say, eome dishonorable means are brought to bear,-pro and eon. Tho most disreputable means, however, of trying to obtain, or rather retain office, is that of causing to be circulated through out the county, false and slanderous re ports regarding a candidate. We arc sorry to say that somebody has stooped so low as to start in circulation reports damaging in their character to one of our most influential and respected citi zens, rerorts utterly without foundation, and yet there are plenty to believe them, simply because th ey know nothing to the contrary and have not the tinle or the in clination to enquiro into the matter and satisfy themselves as to the falsity of the same. We certainly think that if a po litical war mast be waged it should be carried on in a gentlemanly manner, and withont resorting to false statements that, while they may bare some little weight in a political point of view, da far more injury to the private character of the individual thus assailed than they do to his political standiog, and at the same time are liable to ch'tigf to him in af ter years. When a candidate is thus as sailed with false reports, it is no easy matter to clear np the stigma thus cast upon his character Akely for the purpose of making political capital. Truthful statements are of course aflj.wable, and no one will think anything the less of a po litical opponent who ms all lretronble means in his power to farther his inter ests and seenre his election' after he has eatered'tbe lists, aad a aaa who woald not stoop to seek oS6e of his owa accord, might, iff all propriety; after he" has been brought oat by his frfeaoV, work for his nomination and eleetioa, and in tact shovld do k, bat in a manner jast oppo site from the low down aeaBBeM that has prompted the rile reports above referred to, which was pat ia etraalatioa for tat parpose of defaatiac om af tk caadi - J dates now in tlv CU. ... .-...., S7A7Z CXBTCT3i Tbe colored men of LIdcoIi are organ izing militia company. The Argzs editor has been giving Kome good advice to the republican party in this county. He forgets that there is no democratic party to find fault with oer officers when tbey do wrong, and it be eoacs'necessary for the republicans to do it themselves. He seems determined to so educate the party, that they will not bolt a nomination of tbe regular conven tion, end reft an independent candidate for any office. They bave done it success fully and it is very likely they will do it again, if a man u nominated whom they do not approve. It is the people who are doing this busincs, and they will not he bulldoaed into putting men ia of fice who do not suit them, aad if they make a mistake once, they will try it agaia. We are as liable to mistakes in that matter asany other, for there are mea who are perfectly honest and reliable oa a certain level, bat if they are raised above that tbey are failures. Everybody ia this areciact Aenas specially interested in the nomination'of county ofioers this fall, bat we have had eaoaga oeesmis aioaer. No more at present, taaak yew: Sosse other precise ia this district can take that respoaaihiKty.
