Xiove my native country dear, Ne'er liking to be selling ; Hoping for a title clear, And neat and tasteful dwelling. But if hard labor will not bring Improvemen's and protection ; To Uncle Sam I'll surely wing I'll buy a quarter se'on : Very soon with joyous life, Enough I'll get togetha ; .Now to seek for loving wife, Endowed with health and culture So if to us children are given, ---'Baft and happy we'll Iw-'liviutr. not come amiss; or that au inter change of thoughts on the subject might prove beneficial, I attempt to contribute my mite. First, what do we raise wheat for? Most of us, at least, raise it to sell and make money out of it. That being the case, then we shosld farm and sow such seed as will give us the largest reti'rn for our labor and money expended on the crop. As to the farming, most farm ers have their own ideas as to tho best way tc prepare soil, putting it in, etc. ; but all must admit the better it is done, the better crop we get; but as to seed the kind or variety we sow has a great deal to do with profits or loss on crops. Now, it is under stood we raise it for market, theu we must try and suit that market. What does it want or pay the highest price for? Why, sir, of the spring wheat varieties, hard wheat commands the highest price nd why? Because it is the heaviest, makes the most and best flour; the largest yield of mid lings where tho be-st flour in the world comes from, especially where mills have the proper machinery for it, and dress their burrs, adjust their bolting cloths, etc, to suit it. Of this we will not detail, for the reasons are obvious to all practical millers; but as to the farmers, they cannot see why we do not want white wheat and pay a little more for it ; they say we ''used to do it, and it always makes the bc-t flour," &c., very true, under the old system of making flour; but to-day that is ail changed. In all the oest merchant mills, both East and West, that there is choice whitafami- ly Go; r m red hard wheat ha? I ecu the market, and hence the rear-on that we do not want those varieties of wheat to griud. And so it is with others that make it a business to buy wheat to grind, and make flour for the market. As for those that raise win ter wheat, they ought to know if it pays or not. As to the price, there is very little difference in our market here as to quantity and quality of flour. I think the spring wheat on an average holds over the winter at leat such is my experienca; and I have ground several thousand bushels of winter wheat in the last two years. O. HARNESS SHOP S. V.
