POPE For Commissioner 3d district, L. H. LUCE, For County Surveyor, W. E. THORNE, For Coroner, R R SHERER. The trial of "Uncle Billy' Vest, for the alleged attempted murder of the Rev. Maxwell, came off last week, I The jury returned a verdict of assault 'and battery, and he was 6ned$100 and costs. By the request of Mr. Maxwell, the prosecuting witness, he escancd a sentence of three months in jail. We learn that there is c0Uj(i; dissatisfaction among the citrz-ens, over the result of the trial, and it I seems to be the general opinion tha t the accused should have been "sent up" for a term of year, as it is be lievd that certain citizens of Red Cloud are in constant dancer of loos ing their lives if Mr. Vest is allowed to run at large. For oar part we can not think that the old man would cam- Ty and deliberately commit murder, he . is undoubtedly of a very excitable temperament, and might upon any slight provocation rashly commit the deed. We have seen the time, in Webster county, when there was no law, and no protection for life and property ex - cept that vested in the revolver which every man carried at his side, but we had supposed that time had long since passed we regret that circumstances are such, at this advanced day and age, as to render it necessary for any of our citizens to carry arras for self pret - eva - tion. We had thought that we were governed by laws which could and would be enforced, when necssary for the protection of our citizens, and thus making the carving of weapons wholly unnecessary. We find no fault with the jury on this cae, as they doubtless did their duty to the best of their ability, and we hope "Uncle Rilly" will conduct himself in th fu- ture, a he has in the past, prior to the unfortunate occurunce spoken of, iu a manner worthy a good and up right citizen. The commissioners of Harlan Co. have raised the fee for licence to sell liquors to $500. The Sentinel sneak ing of the matter says the following, which meets our views exactly. The argument? old, bnt neverthe less true, that, if it is wrong to sell whiskey, a community, or a neighbor hood has no right to license the wrong and make it legal. If not wron, no more riht exists to take $80 from a saloon keeper for a licens than from a dry goods merchant. We think it wrong to give legal and social sanction, which amounts to moral support, to the liquor traffic in the form of a li cense which pledges the whole commu nity to the policy and enforcement of the rights of the seller uuder his li cens. Last Saturday Mr. Light and family were coming to town in a farm wagon,, when another farmer drove up beside them, which scared Mr. Light's team, causing them to run away. Mr. Light's son, a little boy aged about seven years, was thrown from the wagon and seriously injured. He was brought to town and taken to Louis Steiger's restaurant, where, in about three hours, he died. The parents have the sympathy of the entire com munity iu their sad loss. Fairmont Bulletin M. K. Lewis returned from a trip to Iowa last week, where he has pur chased machinery for his foundry and machine shop. The lumber has ar rived and he will commence the erect- iou of his buildings at once. His pur chases have been of first class materi al, and we glad the day is not far dis tant when we shall have in our young lishing. nzrinv Jnumnl Mr. Comly. formerly one of the pro prietors of the Hastings Journal, has I . retired, and tne paper will be cond bict- ed by the Witoa Bros.
