Ladies don't say you can't afford a new hat when you can get one for a mere trifle at Mrs. Lutz. The Chief is two days behind time thi? week. Several of our "items of interest" have happened since our regular publication day. We were shown the boss farm team of the country the other day. They were a span of dark iron grey horses and belonced to E. Wise, who is far ming Ed. Kellogg' s place. There will be a Tunker love feast meeting held in a tent at the resi dence of Benj. Wagoner, We are pleased to see that Mark II. Warner has been prevailed upon to allow his name to go before the people for the position of Sheriff, Mark has the stuff in him to male a good sheriff. He has been deputy for pome time and is acquainted with the duties of the oiliee. lie h.ss the courage to do his duty fearless of consequences, as was shown recently when he c-ipturod a number of horse thieves in Kancas. He has always f-hown a public spirit and a disposition to freely irive of hi- mean- and bestow his labor for the welfare of the coun ty. These arc the qualities that are especially demanded, and in the pos session of them we know none who hurpases Mark, MABRIED. LUDLOW LEA V ITT. It is our painful duty this week to chronicle the most disgraceful affair that has ever happened in this coun ty since its organization. We refer to the conduct of William F. Vest, better known as "Old Uncle Billy," at the grave of Mr JVIorhart's child yesterday. Mr. Vest it seems, had long held a gruge against Rev. A. Maxwell the clergy man who had been requested to con duct the funeral services. An oppor tunity for revenge had never been presented until j'esterday, when the idea appears to have occurred to Uncle Bill that he might push Mr. Maxwell into the grave and kill him with his shovel, ho succeeded in strik ing Mr. Mr. Maxwell onoe, but only with the shovel haudle, owing to tely u crpowereu would Mr. Zi ild ' flr. agree not to renew his assault on Mr. Maxwell. This morning he made a fresh attack on Mr. Maxwell in Mr. Mitchell hardware store, with more animosity than before, but before he could do-any harm he was seized by MesrsDvyer, Mix and Mitchell who subdued him after a tremendous struggle and held him uutil the arri val of the constable who took him in t-.u.-irge. ai nis examination ne was Iound over in the sum of- $1,000 to appear at the next term of court. He left this (Saturday) afternoon with J. T Prcf V. naltwtn .I.A.
