Tho paradise of fools, "to few un known," is the mental comment as one sees tho many evidences of people's carelessness, foolishness and stupidity which are displayed at tho Dead-Letter Ofllco Museum. Arranged in glass cases on the four sides of tho room :u'o all these waifs of travel, displayed with a view to their respective attractions, and suggestive of the treachery of postage stamps and tho adverse Jato which sometimes overtakes even mail-bags. There is everything known to the use ful and ornamental; everything not smaller than a thimble or larger than a stove-pi po hat. Such a pathetic array of might-have- beens, so eloquent of disappointments and blighted hopes! Locks of hair there are whole switches of them and as for photographs, we aro told that there aro forty bushels of them in the hascmouL of the building. JJut fancy yourself tho recipient of a nice parcel from tlie hands of tho postman some morning, which upon being opened dis closes a live snake! Whether one would go into raptures or h stories at such a treasure would bo a matter of taste, I suppose. JJut, then, people do send snakes through tho mail, and sometimes thoy como back to tho Dead-Letter Office for want of a claimant, and we see them leading a supremely spiritual existence in a glass jar among other stray postal curiosities. It is a fact that a postmaster once found a small live alligator disporting among the letters and papers in a mail-bag. There was also a lxxpict of fresh flowers, which had slipped out of its box; and a couple of empty boxes, von similar in size and shape, and Kith addressed to ladiesjeft the poor man in doubt as to which the alligator bo longed, and to which the flowers. Im agine tho fair recipient ot the flowers finding a monster in her box, instead of the delicate offering which she had ex pected! But the Postmaster made no blunder; ho put the tlowers'into one box, the alligator into tho other; noti fied the ladies of tho slight confusion of proiHjrty which had taken place, and directed each to exchange with tho 1 -ther if sho should receive the wrong le. The man who believes in debt, ami cile- plenty of men of genius who run in debt, is either silly enough to sup pose himself a genius or to mistake folly for genius. Men who wri: wix ly again.-it running in debt may also, like many other preachers, fail utterly to practice their own preaching. Thus. Lord l!aon wrote on the wisdom of business, and ran desperately in debt. Men of geniiii are not always ninnies in their ex jiendit tiros, though we can recall thousands who are. from Macon to Webster. Men of genius may also be able, like I'm and "Webster, to have the most collect idea of public tlnan ees, and yet fail utterly in managing their own affairs. 1'itt received never less than equal to S!'),()oo a year, .some times equ.'U to 'o'Oi, and died equal togiiooMH) in debt.
