Er. Hekald: According to prom
is 1 will drop you a line or so from
the city where the wise men gather
together, and mako chin music for the
nation.
The inauguration of Garfield is said
by the knowing ones to be the biggest
demonstration of the kind ever seen
in tliis country. The snow and ra'n
ou the night of the t..ird east a gloom
over the decorated city, and many
were the long faces .seen yesterday
morning, and especially those who had
elected seats along Pennsylvania
Avenue and for which they asked, the
evening before, from two to live dol
lars each.
About ten o'clock, however, the sun
shone bright, and the crowd estimat
ed at 3U.000 commenced to move;
from that lime until midnight, and 1
might say, lo tne present, 4 p. m., the
Avenue is one solid mass of humanity
composed of all shades, sexes and voca
tions. In the midst of the procession
was drawn a fine rig, four in hand, in
which wera seated Ex-President Hayes
and Ptcsident Garlield and two very
dried up specimens of the sterner sex,
said to be a portion of the 17. S. Su
preme Court.
- Garfield was cheered along the line
and he seemed to appreciate the situa
tion, judging from the graceful nod of
the head occasionally. Next to the
President catue Arthur anil Conkliug;
then members of the Diplomatic
Corps, bout blacks, nigger women and
peanut venders. Col. loin Hall, I'. M.
at Oiuahu, and tlio writer of this blood
curdling and soul inspiring article
took their stand on the curb stone in
front of the National Hotel, -and were
the admiration of the boys who dealt
in badges, programmes, etc., until our
money "give out." This exalted po
sition we were able to hold for live
hours, and when we left, an old color
ed woman who was in our rear ex
claimed, "tank de good Lawd, dem
folks hab wacated and dis old niggah
will now come to de front."

Gen'l Geo. S. Smith, of your place, is
here, as well as ten or fifteen other
Nebraska dign.taries such as Ku.se
waier, Llewellyn, Selli Cole, J. W.
Pearmau, T. F, Hal) who will lie his
own successor in the Omaha Post Office.
Llewellyn has the promise of an In
dian agency among the Mush-a-way
Apacheo Indians of New Mexico,
this semi-barbarous tribe of native
Americans needs civilizing, and Mr.
Lit-well) n is said to be the man lilted
lor the place. What Mr. Rosewater
will -et. outside of a few scalps is hard
to conjecture.
Mr. Eilis Biei bower seems to be the
most lucky Nebrask'an here, for aside
Iroui the II. S. Marshalship of Nebras
ka he lias received, it is runioied
around among those who ought to
know, that he will, in the u ar future,
make another raid ou Senator Saun
ders' generosity and lead to the altar
the Senator daughter, Miss Minnie, a
charming young lady of 22, and one of
the Washington belles that go to make
up the society of this capital city.
Wm. Angau, S. P. Mobly and wifo
are also here, and from what I can
learn, in a fair way to hold ou to what
they have got and may get something
better.
HIGH IIOAI'.l)
Will drive many awav from the city,
who would otherwise linger here lor

THE NEW CABINET
Of which you will become familiar
before this reaches you, seems to give
general satisfaction to all, and I have
no doubt every body will be satislied.
The next thing now will occupy, the
various bureaus, r.nd clear on down to
the smallest place within gift of the
President. Judge Briggs, of Omaha is
strongly mentioned for Com'r. of the
General Land office or Indian affairs.
Nebraska can get one Buieau appoint
ment if the matter is timed, and I be
lieve our Senators will do all they can
to secuie it.
O. H. Irish cl ief of the Bureau of
printing and engraving is ere. Sited to
Nebraska, and is a candidate for the
same place; but if I can read the signs
of the times he will not retain the
place he has made thirty thousand
dollars a year from, since his induc
tion into office. I called at his oflice a
few days since and was shown through
the entiie building, and caught a faint
idea of how the monev is made. In
this office I met J. W. Moore, of Ne
braska City, a clerk who has charge of
the vaults, and when he turns ih key
at night there are "millions in it."
SUNDAY Cth.
As I failed to mail this letter last
night, I will continue. The weather
is delightful and the morning opened
out beaiitii'u!, leiuiuuing us that it is
time to make garden and sow wild
oats, and sicii. The bine birds are
warbling their song. Tom Hall is up
stairs putting ou a clean shirt, while
the writer is cogitating in his own
mind "what did he come here for,"
and that is 'lie question thousands are
now asking themselves, who are still
here and on their way home to coin

the Ame'ican people and they run
