IX C. Mctjuiluen, of Knoxvillfl,
Marion county, Iowa, went to Paris,
Linn comity, to visit a inad-stone. lie
was bitten in the hand by a mad-dog.
The stone, which is about the size of a
chestnut, is fiat on one side and look
like a pi-jco of white sponge. Its owner
punctured . the patient's arm with a
needle, and then made the application.
It held fast, thus indicating that the
man had" been badly poisoned. The
stone would fall off after filling up
with a dark-colored substance; when
it was cleansed with hot milk and wa
ter. The operation lasted over seven
hours, when the stone refused to at
tach itself to the arm any more, which
was evidence that the poison had all
been drawn out. The poor fellow was
very happy indeed to feel relieved
from the mad-dog bite, though he was
badly frightened during the operation,
when the inside of his hand turned
spotted black and white, like the coach
dog that bit him.

Every lady 4,in society'' has her day
for receiving calls, and tlie distribution
of cards is enormous. But calls may
be made extensively without invita
tion. "When strangers visit Wash
ington," she adds, "and take up their
abode at a hotel, they have only to
discover the days of public reception
hire a hack, and proceed to visit. Oil
Monday they can go to the homes ot
the Judges of the Supreme Court and
other courts; on Wednesday they can
call on the Cabinet ladies; on Thurs
day visit all the Senatorial families;
and on Saturday go to the White
House to sec Mrs. Hayes. In c ery
drawing-room the' visitors will find
standing in its centre from one to a
dozen ladies, richly attired, receiving
all with politeness, few with that
gracious charm which makes the lone
liest stranger feel fit home. This is
not strange. These ladies are compell
ed so constantly to greet so many whom
they do not know that, the task be
comes not only monotonous but irk
some. These calls involve no personal
recognition. The lady who received
you on Wednesday in her own parlor
n Thursday may meet you on Urn
street without a "lance ot" reco4intiou."
