"The quiet little town of Un:ililla is worked up to an Indignant excitement of lite. over the establishment of a saloon. This liltlo town was estab libheJ about seven yeai3 ago, and from its Hist commencement its citi zens and those of the surromulins country have woikcd hard to build t: a temperance community, and thus far wo have Leen very successful. Two temperance societies are at work, and wo boasted of having jio saloon at this place; but lately it became known that a petition was in circulation to obtain licen.se for a saloon at this place. This roused the temperance element, and all eft'ort was made to counteract the foul enterprise. The whole precinct was canvassed for a re monstrance. There are one hundred and eixty voters in the precinct, one hundred and forty-six signed the re monstrance and the rest signed the petition lor license. Doth petitions were laid before the county Commis sioners. JJut for want of law the Commissioners were compelled to grant a license. 13 this the kind of a government George Washington and his companions fuu ht for ? Is this a government in which a majority rules? It seems to us that there must be .something wrong somewhere. No blame is attached to our county Com missioners. The law compelled them to grant the license. Who made the law? The Legisla ture, and the people elected the legis lators, hence the responsibilities rest with the people." G. L. Syracuse Journal. Yes, but that same legislature would have passed a good local option, which license law if let alone would have obviated just this dilliculty. The Domestic Xoutlilj. It would seem that in this sultry weather the fashions would bo at staud-stiU. 13ut that this is not the " case it is only necessary to examine the August number of this popular magazine. Twenty-two of its large pages are uevoted to the fashions, in which are contained a large amount of new and useful information concern ing every department of dress. A large array of ladies and children's costumes and garments are also pres ented, with full and precise descrip tions and instructions concerning the making up of them in light sum mer fabrics and other materials. The remainder of tho fashion department is divided up into fad articles, Sea sonable Fabrics, Trimmings, Shoes and Slippers, Millinery, Coiffures, Lingerie, Fancy and Art Needlework, etc., near ly all of them finely illustrated. The colored plat3 is a superb spfcimea of the lithographic ::rt, and shows sever al very stylish costumes. The literary department maintains its customary high standard, its prin cipal attractions consisting of the tirst installment of a new novelette, enti tled "Lost Alice," which promises to be exceedingly entertaining, the con cluding chapters of Mary Cecil Uay's serial "Her Threa LoTers," a very in teresting sketch called, "A Confident 1'roduction," a number of very fine poems, and the usual enjoyable Mis cellany, agreeable small Talk, instruc tive "Household Department," excel lent reviews of new books. Mosaics, etc., the whole forming and valuable number. The Domestic Monthly is published W Llake & Company, Sill Broadway, New York, at 6I.0O per year, inclusive of pattern premium.
