He entered the grocery, said not a

The grocer only said, -'No; we st 11 noth

A Sunday-school teacher in this city,
says the Detroit Free I Yes, has a boy in
her class who has not failed in his penny
contribution for more than a year, and
when he was found empty-handed last
Sabbath, the teacher observed:
'Why, Johuny, did you forget your
penny to-day "
No, ma'am," he humbly replied, "but
father says the "Wabash Hoad will do this
town more good than any fourteen Suu-day-schools,
and Fin going to chuck my
coppers into that enterprise for the next
few weeks."
'Won't the heathen miss your pennies J"
she queried.
"I 'sposc they will, but we've all got to
come riirht down or this town is busted."
Spontaneous Combustion.
E. Iiing, of Itiga, has experimented
with different materials: wadding, raw
llax, hemp, the waste from silk, wool and
cotton spinnings, as well as sjionge, and
finally wood -dust, as found in any cabinet
maker's shop. They were saturated with
various fluids, viz.: oils, fresh ami in a
jummy state, turpentine, petroleum, var
ious varnishes, etc. All fibrous inateria's
took lire when saturated with any of these
oils or with mixtures of the same. Spongu
and wood-dust, on the contrary, proved
to le entirely harmless. Combustion en
sues most rapidly with 17 gr. of wadding
and 07 gr. of a strong oil - varnish, in
thirty-four minutes; while 200 gr. of
washed cotton w aste, of which a poitiou
was saturated with 7"J gr. of stong oil
varnish and the remainder wrapped ulout
it, required almost fourteen hours. These
materials were placed in a well-shaded
sjot, and subjected to a heat of from 18
deg. to 4 deg. (V.) Silk did not flame up,
but slowly charred.
