You see Pepperberg has got cher
ries and we haven't; and we were just
wondering what spite fate had at us
this year that our trees bore nary a
cherry and Neigbor P's were full. We
thought maybe it was because he was
a Councilman and made up our mind
to run next spring and get some cher
ries; but just as we began to "figge "
on the votes. Mrs. P. came over with
a delightful dish of fresh, red, ripe
cherries and now we don't care one
cent whether its his trees or ours that
bear fruit.
The store of Smith &, Black is just
crammed full of goods of every variety
and style in their line. Its a marvel
how they get around or know where
all the things are. Smith, the nior
member of the firm (now, i he. Mio
senior?) busy and industrio is, 5s al
ways ready to attend to customers, and
knows how to please them. Charbiy
Black though ho isn't the Black, ex
actlyyet what he doesn't know about
the drug business isn't worth knowing
and nobody could help liking Ch-uley
behind the counter. Altogether, they
make a good team, and deserve the pat
ronage of the community.
We were the delighted recipients
the other evening of a boquet from
Mr. Llewellyn Moore which discounts
anything we have sert y-t. It was a
m ir.t b.Niu.iful boquut u nlir a glass
globe fiile.l with watei. The graceful
appearance of tl.e feathery ferns, and
blossoms of the delicate gypsophila
and other 11 , vers seen through the wa
ter is beyond uur power to deacribo;
but any one deslro is of S 'eing it for
themselves can have the privilege of
doing so by cal!ii.g at the Hkiialu
mausi!i. For graceful an J elegant ar
rangement of flowers Mr. Mojre has
scarcely an equal anywhere.
Pottenger thinks he has a good
tiling on Raphael J. Moses, a gentle
man who hag been representing him
self as an attorney for collection of
claims against the Continebtal Life
Insurance Company. After much cor
respondence Mr. Moses writes Pot a
vrry interesting letter giving him good
advice by the bushel aud consoling him
by saying that as Pot is supposed t be
a Lawyer he ought to have known all
these things; finally lie brings Pot cut
in debt to the Company about 837.00.
Pottenger coucludes Moses has led
him round in the wilderness long
enough and that further Moses is an
Attorney on the other side.
From the St. Jo. Evening News
we learn that Miss Minnie Balsing'-:-a
sister of Mrs. Gu3. Hereld with
whom she has lived a portion of the
time for several years past, was mar
ried at St. Jo. on the night of the 13th
inst. to Mr. Henry Volker of that
place. It seems Miss Minnie, who has
been in St. Jo. for some time, was not
favored in her love affair by her friends,
and her sister had gone dowu with tl.e
intention of returning with her to
Piattsmouth, but having a mind of
her own and that mind inclined to
wards the object of her affections, Miss
Minnie notified him of their intended
departure, and after due consultation
they were quietly married while the
sifter was sleeping the sleep of the
just. So Miss Minnie is now Mrs.
Henry Volker.
John Shannon and nenry Boeck
had a big tioe last week. You know
Henry has put a balcony along in
front of his house andCal.Parraelehas
continued it along the whole building.
Shannon asked Boeck why he put a
partition across the balcony between
the buildings? Henry said he didn't
want his children and other folks mix
ed up and he proposed to have things
to himself. Johu Shannon replie 1 that
if he was afraid his (Shannon's) chil
dren would come over and crawl upon
that balcony from Parmele's side (or
Bocck's either) he was mistaken and
he'd better keep his own children "to
hum." Bweck said anybody that had
such looking "yonn uns'" as Shan
nons had better keep 'em home to keep
'em from suckin' eggs. Shannon said
Boeck's "young uns" would scare Frank
Morrison's boat into bustin her " biler
agin" if they stood on the river bank.
Here both men prepared to clinch,
when Pat Murphy came along and af
ter hearing the case, sentenced John
Shannon to take Boeck's whole family
out driving in the best rig he had and
Boeck to give Shannon a good two
horse cradle at once and keep the peace
hereafter, or inaugurate one of the
cells in the well to stay home and
mind their own business and babies
respectively.
